And that’s what The Wire was about basically, it was about people who were worth less and who were no longer necessary, as maybe 10 or 15% of my country is no longer necessary to the operation of the economy. It was about them trying to solve, for lack of a better term, an existential crisis. In their irrelevance, their economic irrelevance, they were nonetheless still on the ground occupying this place called Baltimore and they were going to have to endure somehow.
That’s the great horror show. What are we going to do with all these people that we’ve managed to marginalise? It was kind of interesting when it was only race, when you could do this on the basis of people’s racial fears and it was just the black and brown people in American cities who had the higher rates of unemployment and the higher rates of addiction and were marginalised and had the shitty school systems and the lack of opportunity.
And kind of interesting in this last recession to see the economy shrug and start to throw white middle-class people into the same boat, so that they became vulnerable to the drug war, say from methamphetamine, or they became unable to qualify for college loans. And all of a sudden a certain faith in the economic engine and the economic authority of Wall Street and market logic started to fall away from people. And they realised it’s not just about race, it’s about something even more terrifying. It’s about class. Are you at the top of the wave or are you at the bottom?
So how does it get better? In 1932, it got better because they dealt the cards again and there was a communal logic that said nobody’s going to get left behind. We’re going to figure this out. We’re going to get the banks open. From the depths of that depression a social compact was made between worker, between labour and capital that actually allowed people to have some hope.

Who would ever thought that a Filipino could make a big difference in protecting the environment, especially in the field of law? Tony Oposa did, not only once but twice. First during his case which is popularly known as Minors Oposa vs. Factoran in which he sued the Department of Environment and Natural Resources and demanding the cancellation of all existing logging concessions and an injuction against new one. These logging concessions deforest what remains to be only 4% of virgin forests in the country. The second was his case against government agencies in cleaning up Manila Bay which after 10 years, was ruled by the Supreme Court in favor of Oposa’s cause. These two famous cases was a landmark victory in environmental law, testing the waters for future cases and paving the way for environmental law in becoming an established branch of the legal system.

However, without the global focus that the protests provided, the delegates from the world's poorest countries would likely have continued to be ignored. Today many poor nations are stating that a similar process is being enacted in regards to climate change policies. The UN Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen may turn out to be as much of a rallying call for organizations worldwide as the WTO Ministerial was ten years ago. However, the arguments that the protesters at the WTO in Seattle were uniformly violent or that they were spoiled white kids who were standing in the way of institutional reform are clearly flawed. The policies that were being implemented at that time affected so many people, in so many various ways, that the differences between environmentalists and labor unions, American students and Korean farmers or rabble rousers and WTO delegates were erased. In that moment people came together to initiate the first shot in a struggle that continues to this day.

Let me just say that the volunteers , organizers, speakers, and the event was top notch!
The place had wifi, even the cafeteria, and all the CSB guards, custodians, and the few people in campus were very accommodating.

Yup, you read that right, San Miguel Pale Pilsen is bringing Third Eye Blind to Manila for the grand opening of this year’s Oktoberfest. On September 5, this world renowned rock band, along with Philippine’s top bands will be gracing one of the four stages along San Miguel Avenue. San Miguel is aiming to break two Guiness records with this year’s grand Oktoberfest: the most number of people toasting, and the longest bar. Apart from the copious amounts of beer, participants can also interact with SMB’s personalities, like Efren Bata Reyes and PBA players.

Dave Winer always says that you go to conferences and events like these for the conversations in the hallways and the like, barCamp Manila was no exception and as a personal note I finally understand what he was saying.
Hope the next barCamp happens soon, because from talking to people many had stuff to present but when at the 3 hour mark didn’t want to impose on other people!
