rePost :: :: The Web will eat itself over WikiLeaks

I realize there are other events taking place in Tech Land these days. Google, for example, seems determined to roll out a new operating system every damned day — Gingerbread [10], Honeycomb [11], Chrome [12], and so on. But I can’t stop thinking about WikiLeaks.
Why? Because this is the single most important story to hit the Internet ever. It dwarfs the Drudge Report’s Monica Lewinsky scoop, the Twitter anti-Tehran uprising, and even the Pam Anderson sex video. Never before has a small band of whatever-you-want-to-call-thems taken on every major nation simultaneously, twisting them into knots. But thanks to the distributed nature of the Net, they have — and I suspect they won’t be the last.
Also: Journalism as we knew it is over. No more trade-offs between revealing some things while keeping other information private, of choosing between the necessary secrets governments must keep and the public’s right to know — it’s now a free-for-all.

rePost:: ::On Competitive Collaboration § SEEDMAGAZINE.COM

A deeper understanding of the universe, new technologies, and a role model for managing broadly distributed and culturally varied organizations: These are outcomes of basic science that are valuable to society. And it’s reasonable to expect the scientific community to deliver them in the short term. The most valuable in terms of sustained improvement of the world is the one closest to my heart—understanding the universe and in the process laying down a new seam of fundamental scientific knowledge for future generations to mine. Human ingenuity being what it is, the future will undoubtedly bring applications based on discoveries made with the LHC. Although, as with Newton’s gravity, it may be some time before we’re privy to all of them, and to their implications. For our children and grandchildren, however, I am sure that the wait will have been worthwhile.

rePost::To See:: LOVE AND OTHER DRUGS is a great relationship movie almost single-handedly ruined by one performance, says Capone!!! — Ain't It Cool News: The best in movie, TV, DVD, and comic book news.

At its core, LOVE AND OTHER DRUGS is, as the title implies, a love story and a perfect example of one at that. More than that, it’s the story of two adults falling in love. Yes, there are complications in the relationship, but they aren’t the kind of manufactured, childish bullshit that 95 percent of the world’s romantic comedies seem to thrive upon. These are real-world issues between two flawed individuals who are struggling to find a way to be together against adversities that could easily tear them apart. As upsetting as it might be to see them clumsily maneuver their way around the early stages of this serious relationship, because these two actors are as strong as they’ve ever been, it’s also highly entertaining. LOVE AND OTHER DRUGS is the film adults should make a point to see over this long weekend. As a bonus, for the first half of the movie, you couldn’t pay Hathaway to keep her clothes on. So, there’s that. Enjoy the hell out of this one, people.

rePost:: Best Read::All the lonely people – Roger Ebert's Journal

Nice post read the whole thing.

When I was a child the mailman came once a day. Now the mail arrives every moment. I used to believe it was preposterous that people could fall in love online. Now I see that all relationships are virtual, even those that take place in person. Whether we use our bodies or a keyboard, it all comes down to two minds crying out from their solitude.

Musings 2010 11 03 and Wasted Life Vol 03

  • Need to jot this down before I forget. Instant favorite Scott Pilgrim vs The World!!!!
  • For me it defined a visual style much like Natural Born Killer defined the MTV/Howard Stern 24/7 news cycle was for the early 90’s.
  • I liked it more than 500 days of summer, although this may be because of a more conventional ending.
  • I’m hating on myself right now If as I suspect I wasn’t able to catch this at a movie theater, although It benefits the other people at the movie house that I would probably have less of a physical and auditory reaction than if I would be seeing it for the first time.
  • Edgar Wright was able to make an adaptation to a graphic novel that was not only faithful but actually in my opinion more true to what the original artist envisioned.
  • AWESOME. MUST NOT BE MISSED.

PS: I am silently scared of the day when I will no longer be able to get it. I describe not getting it as what you do not have when you watch the graduate and you weren’t alive or at least was part of that era that was being depicted.
Watch and Reading list for last week.

  • Neon Genesis Evangelion 1st half and Movies
  • The West Wing Season 1
  • How I Met Your Mother
  • Big Bang Theory
  • Community
  • GLEE
  • The Daily Show with Jon Stewart
  • The Colbert Report
  • Cloverfield
  • I was able to catch 2 episode of How To Make It In America. would probably try watching this.
  • Was finally able to finish The Man In The High Castle and it was a great book from one of the masters of fiction.
  • Was able to watch the rally to restore sanity and or fear live through web feed. Loved it.

Musings 2010 10 27 17–H

  • It seems President Noy didn’t declare Nov 2 as a holiday. FAIL.
  • I’ve been out of sorts lately and it just recently came to my attention that Darren Aronofsky is directing Wolverine 2. WOW. I still have problems watching Requiem for a Dream (It depresses me too much, but its), and I still believe that The Fountain was underrated and of course everybody loves “The Wrestler”. I haven’t watched Pi which my sister tells me is very good.
  • The internet connectivity of our office was non-existent since Friday last week. That’s globe’s connectivity reliability for you.  In other words pag may bayantel don’t even think twice.
  • Didn’t like this weeks GLEE episode. Personal reasons.
  • Hope someone does a The Daily Show copycat for the Philippines. Two problems with this, who gets to play Jon Stewart. TV5 needs to do this. One of the revamped shows of TV 5 that I found enjoyable was the show which I forgot the name of which was basically TMZ for politicians. If they can copy something like this they should copy The Daily Show and the Colbert Report.

I really need to file all the great quotes I’ve compiled through watching an insane amount of film and television. Quotations from books are straight forward you just highlight the book and flip through your copy of the book.
UPDATE :
Was able to watch this saturday
  • 28 Weeks Later  – When the individual trumps the group its society that fails
  • You, Me and Dupree – Owen wilson is targeting one type of character and it’s becoming tedious
  • Battle Royale 2 – Whereas the first film is more a commentary on Japanese society the next films .
  • Battle Royale 1 – Social commentary at its best. When you have a median age of 47 and rising every year. Many things have been written about this societal time bomb but it really cant be helped. What Japan is experiencing is what other developed nations will eventually experience.
PS 2: I really must learn to write proper reviews for films.

Experiment of The Day :: People In Doubt Of Their Closely Held Beliefs Advocate Their Beliefs More???

I think this is a perfect post for the Freethinkers page.

Across three experiments, people whose confidence in closely held beliefs was undermined engaged in more advocacy of their beliefs (as measured by both advocacy effort and intention to advocate) than did people whose confidence was not undermined. The effect was attenuated when individuals affirmed their beliefs, and was moderated by both importance of the belief and open-mindedness of a message recipient. These findings not only have implications for the results of Festinger’s seminal study, but also offer new insights into people’s motives for advocating their beliefs.

QUOTE :: if I'm going to jump off the cliff and you're going to get pushed off the cliff, why don't we hold hands on the way down?

If I’m going to jump off the cliff and you’re going to get pushed off the cliff, why don’t we hold hands on the way down?  + Danny Kincaid , The West Wing Season 7, Episode 11.

Copied transcript from here :

“I’m sorry about the other night.”
“Why?”
“Because, I was behaving like the type-A, career woman, freak automaton that I so very much do not what to become.”
“Please.”
“I wanted to see you— And I haven’t felt that in a long time and I just got all awkward and antagonistic…. But don’t get me wrong: I don’t want to see you again until after the inauguration.”
“You won’t have to.”
“I want to do my job. I want to suck every morsel of meat off this experience before it’s over….”
“That was an attempt at a real date the other night.”
“And this?”
“Another attempt. Hey, if I’d have wanted to publish that story, I wouldn’t have given you the heads-up. I can’t write that kind of crap anymore. I don’t— I don’t even know if I want to be a reporter anymore.”
“Really?”
“Doug Westin’s libido broke the camel’s back.”
“What do you want to do?”
“I don’t know. Can I ask you something?”
“Yeah.”
“Why’d you come here tonight?”
“Because you made me promise to.”
“Why’d you come?”
“I wanted to see you….”
“Uh, I’m flying a little blind here. I’m halfway through my life and I’m never quite sure if I’m doing anything right until I’m completely done doing it wrong….”
“So this may come out wrong.”
“I forgive you.”
“Incrementalism is not an option. Forced into a heroic posture.”
“Heroic can be good.”
“Feels funny.”
“You can do it.”
“Uh, we’re both about to fall of a cliff and I don’t know what I’m going to do with the rest of my life except I know what I don’t want to do. And on Inauguration Day you’re going to be released from that glorious prison on Pennsylvania Avenue with…. So, if I’m going to jump off the cliff and you’re going to get pushed off the cliff, why don’t we hold hands on the way down?”
C.J.’s pager goes off. “Oh, my God. Oh, my God.”
“You okay?”
“…I have to go.”
“Okay.”
“I have to go.”
“Go, go.”

This was an excellent episode, it shows why the chief of staff is known as the little president.

rePost :: Firefighters watch a house burn down over fees… pathetic::Think Progress » Tennessee County’s Subscription-Based Firefighters Watch As Family Home Burns Down

The conservative vision was on full display last week in Obion County, Tennessee. In this rural section of Tennessee, Gene Cranick’s home caught on fire. As the Cranicks fled their home, their neighbors alerted the county’s firefighters, who soon arrived at the scene. Yet when the firefighters arrived, they refused to put out the fire, saying that the family failed to pay the annual subscription fee to the fire department. Because the county’s fire services for rural residences is based on household subscription fees, the firefighters, fully equipped to help the Cranicks, stood by and watched as the home burned to the ground:
Imagine your home catches fire but the local fire department won’t respond, then watches it burn. That’s exactly what happened to a local family tonight. A local neighborhood is furious after firefighters watched as an Obion County, Tennessee, home burned to the ground.
