rePost:: Rough Type: Nicholas Carr's Blog: Distractions and decisions

“We’re fooled by immediacy and quantity and think it’s quality,” says Eric Kessler, a management expert at Pace University’s Lubin School of Business. “What starts driving decisions is the urgent rather than the important.”
The fact that we think less clearly when we’re distracted shouldn’t be a big surprise, but perhaps the hard evidence Begley reviews will give pause to those who labor under the misapprehension that, when it comes to information, more is always better.

On Tuesday I’ll finally end my battle with cancer thanks to Oregon’s Death with dignity act. As part of my preparations I’ve ended my pain medication and am trying to regain what little dignity and clarity I can.
Who I was doesn’t matter. I’m in pain, I’m tired and I’m finally being granted a small shred of respect. Feel free to AMA if you’re so inclined.

any regrets?

Lucidending [S] 674 points 17 hours ago[-]

Yes, one. I bought my high school sweetheart an engagement ring and never gave it to her. Life happened, meaning in was dumb. I went in the military after a dumb fight and…. Yeah just one

Send the ring to her, there is still time!

Lucidending [S] 146 points 16 hours ago[-]

That would be awful. I found her 9 months ago and talked on the phone. She has no idea I’m sick and asked to meet. I have a letter for her that she will get Monday morning. She may call, but I’ll never tell her about the ring. I plan to take it with me

rePost :: PeteSearch: The American Way of Dating

Hmm the weird thing is that we follow the american model when out heterogeneity as a nation maybe lends itself more towards the British model.

The British standard is “go to a party, down some drinks, make eye contact with a person you fancy, proceed to kissing and often much more, wake up the next morning to find that you have magically become one half of a couple”. It seems like the goal was to avoid any unambiguous declarations of interest, so that at any point either person can end the process without the other losing face.
This isn’t how it usually works in the US, at least in the mainstream. The formality and rituals surrounding courtship feel like something out of a Noh play. The very idea of actually asking a near-stranger for a date, explicitly and with no particular preamble, in the full knowledge that you may be turned down, seems nothing short of revolutionary compared to the system I grew up with.

Current LSS :: Dr. Dre – I Need A Doctor (Explicit) ft. Eminem, Skylar Grey

[Hook: Skylar Grey]
I’m about to lose my mind
You’ve been gone for so long, I’m runnin’ outta time
I need a doctor, call me a doctor
I need a doctor, doctor to bring me back to life
[Verse 1: Eminem]
I told the world one day I would pay it back
Say it on tape, and lay it, record it so that one day I could play it back
But I don’t even know if I believe it when I’m sayin’ that
Doubts startin’ to creep in, everyday it’s so grey and black
Hope, I just need a ray of that, cause no one sees my vision
When I play it for ‘em, they just say it’s wack, they don’t know what dope is
And I don’t know if I was awake or asleep when I wrote this
All I know is you came to me when I was at my lowest
You picked me up, breathin’ life in me, I owe my life to you
But for the life of me, I don’t see why you don’t see like I do
But it just dawned on me you lost a son, demons fighting you, it’s dark
Let me turn on the lights and brighten me and enlighten you
I don’t think you realise what you mean to me, not the slightest clue
Cause me and you were like a crew, I was like your sidekick
You gon either wanna fight me when I get off this fuckin’ mic
Or you gon’ hug me, but I’m outta options, there’s nothin’ else I can do cause
[Hook]
[Verse 2: Eminem]
It hurts when I see you struggle, you come to me with ideas
You say they’re just pieces, so I’m puzzled, cause the shit I hear is crazy
But you’re either gettin’ lazy or you don’t believe in you no more
Seems like your own opinions, not one you can form
Can’t make a decision you keep questionin’ yourself
Second guessin’ and it’s almost like your beggin’ for my help
Like I’m your leader, you’re supposed to fuckin’ be my mentor
I can endure no more I demand you remember who you are
It was YOU, who believed in me when everyone was tellin’
You don’t sign me, everyone at the fuckin’ label, let’s tell the truth
You risked your career for me, I know it as well as you
Nobody wanted to fuck with the white boy, Dre, I’m cryin’ in this booth
You saved my life, now maybe it’s my turn to save yours
But I can never repay you, what you did for me is way more
But I ain’t givin’ up faith and you ain’t givin’ up on me
Get up Dre I’m dyin’, I need you, come back for fuck’s sake
[Hook]
[Verse 3: Dr. Dre]
It literally feels like a lifetime ago
But I still remember the shit like it was just yesterday, though
You walked in, yellow jump suit, whole room, cracked jokes
Once you got inside the booth, told you, MiC smoke
Went through friends, some of them I put on, but they just left
They said they was ridin’ to the death, but where the fuck are they now?
Now that I need them, I don’t see none of them
All I see is Slim, fuck all you fair-weather friends, all I need is him
Fuckin’ backstabbers, when the chips were down you just laughed at us
Now you bout to feel the fuckin’ wrath of Aftermath, faggots
You gon’ see us in our lab jackets and ask us where the fuck we been?
You can kiss my indecisive ass crack, maggots
And the crackers’ ass, little crack a jack beat
Makin’ wack math, backwards producers, I’m back bastards
One more CD and then I’m packin’ up my bags and as I’m leavin’
I’ll guarantee they scream, “Dre, don’t leave us like that man!” cause

Astig, Estrada on the Offensive

Revenge is a dish best served cold. hehehe. I have a feeling that the recent offensive against the afp generals (notice the non capitalization FTS). I have a suspicion that these are the same generals that withdrew their support from the former president.
Corrupt VS Corrupt the people win??
I’ve always been conflicted about this, but if we have to wait for a white knight (CUE in Hans Zimmer) we would probably never be able to clean up the system. Cleaning up large messes such as our society has proven to be a game of inches (superbowl inspired sentence). We try to improve little by little, introduce systems of oversight , systems of transparency, till we finally have a place most people can be proud of.
We should view the Philippines as a young country, we do not have the foundations of a 1000, 2000  even 3000 year old culture for a cohesive and ready for success country. Philippine culture is probably less than 50 years and yet what we have already achieved when viewed in the proper context cannot be scoffed at.
BTW this is a rabbit hole we are entering. Who watches the watchmen?? (We are looking at you COA and Ombudsman)
PS: Both parents of a friend work for the COA, I have nothing against the Commission and my dealing with them have shown that the bad apples are concentrated on certain institutions(I’m looking at you DPWH, Customs, and BIR) and most people try their best and are honest people.

rePost::HOWTO make health-care cheaper by spending more on patients who need it – Boing Boing

The approach is marvellous because it is both data-driven (data-mining is used to identify which patients aren’t getting the care they need) and extremely compassionate (“super-utilizers” are voluntarily enrolled in programs where they get 24/7 guaranteed access to doctors, nurses and social workers). The programs are successful, and even though they cost a lot to administer, they still generate system-wide savings — one patient helped with this sort of care had previously cost $3.5 million a year because of heavy ER and ICU use. In other words, providing excellent, personalized care to the small number of patients who don’t fit the system’s model saves far more money than making the system more stringent, with more paperwork, higher co-pays and other punitive measures. It’s a win-win.

Always a silver lining. I salute Admiral Guillermo Wong. This shows how someone who is a party to corruption can be more damaging. By removing the person who should have been a beacon of hope towards reforms in the Armed Services, he dimmed the light of reform and even showed the younger officers how moral uprightness becomes a cross against keeping the position.

“When I was there..the programmed P40 million every month for PCDA was being controlled by the chief of staff. If we cannot come up with the amount, this is augmented by the major services – Navy, Air Force and the Army – and the key budgetary units, the PMA, the PSG and AFP Medical Center or V. Luna (Hospital) so that we could generate the P40 million a month which is equivalent to about P480 million a year and that is the so-called PCDA that is readily available to the disposal of the chief of staff,” Rabusa said.
For his part, Trillanes said the PCDA was given various names such as incentive pay or core command staff representation.
He added that while a representation allowance for the chief of staff is understandable, a P5 million monthly allowance is “staggering.”
“That’s a systemic form of corruption. The leader loses his moral authority to cleanse the system because [the corruption] is automatic,” he said in Pilipino.
He noted that only one military official, Admiral Guillermo Wong, had the guts to turn down the offer of discretionary funds from the military comptroller. He thus had a free hand to clean up the Philippine Navy.
However, he was later removed from his post by Reyes.
Garcia can still testify

I keep on reading these words and thinking: “S/he was using xxxxx to fill in a void emotionally, perhaps to satisfy herself/himself” has that sad truth about it that is scary in way.
