‘Filipino’ finally counts in US census

MANILA, Philippines — The word “Filipino” will appear as a separate race category in the 2010 national census in the United States, according to recent reports of Filipino-American media outlets.
This means Filipinos in the US will no longer be counted under the general “Asian” category like in the 2000 census.
“They now have a box of their own to describe their ethnicity as a separate and distinct group of people from Asia living in the US,” said the Filipino Reporter newspaper early this week.

This is excellent news, I’ve always been very curious about Filipinos in the US (More than a quarter of my family belongs to this as probably most Filipinos).  Maybe this would clear up many misconceptions we have about Fil-Ams.

Pulse Asia: 86% of Pinoys look forward to 2010 with hope
12/16/2009 | 02:44 PM
After a year marred with natural, political and economic turbulence, nearly nine of 10 Filipinos are hopeful the coming year will be better, according to a survey by pollster Pulse Asia.
The survey said 86% of Filipinos look forward to the year ahead with hope, while 49% said Christmas 2009 will be no different from last year’s.
“For about half of Filipinos (49%), the coming Christmas will be no different from the one they had a year ago; on the other hand, a big majority (86%) is looking forward to the year ahead with hope,” it said on its Website.
“Most Filipinos across all geographic areas and socio-economic classes (80% to 90%) are optimistic about the year ahead. Between October 2008 and 2009, there is an 8-percentage point increase among Filipinos who say they will face the year ahead with hope,” it added.
It said near to sizeable majorities across the country’s main geographic areas (45% to 53%) and across socio-economic classes (46% to 56%) say that this Christmas season will be the same as in 2008.
Big pluralities in the smaller geographic areas of Eastern Visayas and Region X1 projected a heightened sense of optimism for this Christmas season.

The ability of people including Filipinos to see the silver lining will never cease to amaze me.

More lava flows from Mayon
abs-cbnNEWS.com | 12/16/2009 12:26 PM
MANILA, Philippines – Lava continued to flow from Mayon Volcano's mouth coupled with more high frequency volcano earthquakes, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said Wednesday.
Phivolcs said in its 8 a.m. report that it has recorded 78 high frequency volcanic earthquakes and tremors for the past 24 hours.
“The volcanic earthquakes represent magma ascent towards the crater of the volcano while tremors were associated to the detached fragments of lava and rockfalls,” the agency said.
Phivolcs said lava that have flowed out of the volcano has reached 700 meters to 800 meters downslope below the crater.

rePost::Seth's Blog: Who controls your media?

If your Facebook circle is draining your energy and not pushing you forward, why, precisely, is it there? If you are spending more than a few minutes a day on Twitter, is it because you can't stop or because stopping will cost you your goals? Which is more important: a ringing telephone or an unfinished new concept on your screen, waiting for you to type out the rest of it?
via Seth’s Blog: Who controls your media?.

Is it just me , but why is it that I find reading feeds in google reader  energizing whilst reading stuff off facebook drains me? Its the same between twitter and blogging. I feel energized when I blog but twitter tires me. What is this, old man of the web syndrome??? yikes.

ROTD::Mathematics of slicing pizza Boing Boing

uppose the harried waiter cuts the pizza off-centre, but with all the edge-to-edge cuts crossing at a single point, and with the same angle between adjacent cuts. The off-centre cuts mean the slices will not all be the same size, so if two people take turns to take neighbouring slices, will they get equal shares by the time they have gone right round the pizza – and if not, who will get more? Of course you could estimate the area of each slice, tot them all up and work out each person's total from that. But these guys are mathematicians, and so that wouldn't quite do. They wanted to be able to distil the problem down to a few general, provable rules that avoid exact calculations, and that work every time for any circular pizza. “The perfect way to slice a pizza”

I’m going to try this the next time I go out for pizza hehehe!

The greatest thing ever invented!, October 26, 2009

Wow is this thing great! I use it as a “mini-bar” when the friends and I go out to the bars. I can quickly fix multiple shots of tequila for myself and the friends as we drive from one bar to the next. We also discovered that if you place a pillow on top of it and turn on the cruise control you can catch quick naps on the interstate. If you swerve to the left or right the rumble strips on the road wake you up in plenty of time before you get into trouble. I can now take longer trips without being tired!
Also, i am now dating a midget and she fits nicely on the steering wheel desk which allows us to experiment sexually while driving. This thing is like WD-40 or duct tape, it is a million and one uses!

Data
All the data we’ve extracted and cleaned is available on google docs linked from our summary spreadsheet.
The majority of our present data comes from the Public Expenditure Statistical Analysis (PESA) which is the highest level breakdown of Government spending. However, we aim to have information at a much more granular level down to the lowest levels of government expenditure.
An introduction to our material with details of what we’re working and where we need help can be found here.
If have ideas for data we should incorporate and where we can find it please let us know using the form below.

This is cool, wish we could do this to data from the philippines.
If I can find out where I can get this data for free. probably either from the NSO (National Statistics Office) or Possibly Congress/Senate archives. I don’t know but I am putting this on my todo list!!
