“Look,” he says, “Back then I was just one of thousands of young wannabe film knuckleheads in New York, trying to get my foot in the door. I needed to have a story to tell people. One that was interesting. One that was different. One that got people’s attention. One that made me stand out from all the other knuckleheads. One that didn’t require me having a massive showreel. Hey, it worked. That story got me my first few editing jobs in the business. And since then I’ve been nothing but successful.”

MANILA, Philippines–Senator Manuel “Mar” Roxas II on Monday asked the Senate to look into Malacanang’s alleged involvement in supplying the Ampatuan clan with high-powered firearms.
Roxas said it was important to find out how the Ampatuans acquired its sophisticated arms cache and ammunition so Congress could come up with stricter legislative measures to regulate government’s procurement of high-powered firearms.
This prompted Roxas to file Senate Resolution 1533 asking the chamber to look into the matter.

rePost::Corner Office – Tony Hsieh of Zappos – Celebrate Individuality – Question – NYTimes.com

Nice interview, offers us a peek to what David Logan calls a level 4 tribe.

Q. But what were those?
A. For example, for our offices in Las Vegas, it’s a big building. We’ve probably got 700 employees in Vegas. The previous tenants had multiple doors where you can exit, and the parking lot is in the back. We made the decision to actually lock all the doors so everyone has to go through the front-entrance reception area, even though that means you might have to walk all the way around the building. The reason for that is to create this kind of central hub that everyone has to pass through to help build community and culture.
And the free lunch we provide for employees is really meant less as a benefit in terms of a free lunch, and more to get employees to interact with each other. But most of the stuff that happens in our office is really about some employee coming up with an idea and, whether it’s me or other managers, saying, “If you’re passionate about it, just run with it.”
At some point, it kind of just snowballs, because once employees see other employees just doing stuff, then that lets them feel like they have more permission to run with their ideas.

rePost:: 14 Thoughts on Advice Giving and Receiving

Very nice list. be sure to read the whole thing!

5. “Passion” and “Voice” are two of the most frequent and most vague pieces of advice. Career counselors tell young people to follow their passion and writing coaches tell writers to find their voice. Both are horribly misunderstood.
6. Beware of advice from meta-careerists. That is, beware of advice from someone who is a professional advice-giver (a full-time self-help author, say), rather than someone in the trenches.
7. When giving advice, include the word “because.” It increases eventual absorption, regardless of what you say after the word “because.”
8. When you give advice, give the person options, and let them choose the best path. People hate to be told what to do — need to make them feel empowered to make the decision for themselves.

rePost::Pagbabago and what it really means to us, Pinoys | Filipino Voices

Aquino and Villar do not offer “pagbabago”–they offer an “exchange” or only “palitan”—from an administration dominated by one elite group to another. They want their elite groups to transpose the existing one.
Worst, are the two remaining presidentiables, namely Teodoro and Gordon who offer the worst form of “pagbabago”. There is nothing transformative about Gordon’s “transformative politics”, read his platform—there’s no “transformative ideas” there–only motherhood statements.
Gordon wants to barter and what’s worst, he will be bartering our very futures when he becomes president. What Gordon offers is what we call “cosmetic change”–he wants nothing more than changes in the exterior aspect of our life.
Teodoro offers new leadership only, the kind which we have been accustomed to since nine years ago. Nothing about pagbabago as we want or aspire for—more of “transactional” change. In fact, Teodoro wants Gloria to be on his side when he wins and that is so evident in his public statements. Teodoro represents grossly traditional or G.T. politics.
Who, then, holds the right interpretation of “pagbabago” ? Is Erap Estrada, who did not attend the forum, offers us the “pagbabago” which we so desperately seek?
No. Estrada just wants to continue what he failed to finish. He offers nothing new, except perhaps, a new face?
Who, then, holds the right interpretation of “pagbabago”?

The best films of the decade

synch hoiffman.jpg”Synecdoche, New York” is the best film of the decade. It intends no less than to evoke the strategies we use to live our lives. After beginning my first viewing in confusion, I began to glimpse its purpose and by the end was eager to see it again, then once again, and I am not finished. Charlie Kaufman understands how I live my life, and I suppose his own, and I suspect most of us. Faced with the bewildering demands of time, space, emotion, morality, lust, greed, hope, dreams, dreads and faiths, we build compartments in our minds. It is a way of seeming sane.
The mind is a concern in all his screenplays, but in “Synecdoche” (2008), his first film as a director, he makes it his subject, and what huge ambition that demonstrates. He's like a
novelist who wants to get it all into the first book in case he never publishes another. Those who felt the film was disorganized or incoherent might benefit from seeing it again. It isn't about a narrative, although it pretends to be. It's about a method, the method by which we organize our lives and define our realities.
Very few people live their lives on one stage, in one persona, wearing one costume. We play different characters. We know this and accept it. In childhood we begin as always the same person but quickly we develop strategies for our families, our friends, our schools. In adolescence these strategies are not well controlled. Sexually, teenagers behave one way with some dates and a different way with others. We find those whose have a persona that matches one of our own, and that defines how we interact with that person. If you aren't an aggressor and are sober, there are girls (or boys) you do it with and others you don't, and you don't want those people to discover what goes on away from them.

I trust ebert’s judgement in most anything not action/comedy/non-intellectual. I still don’t know how to think about Synecdoche NY, what I do know is that it speaks to me in a way that I do not know or won’t admit to myself yet.

GEEKS BEST IN BED – GYM-GOERS MOST SELFISH
* Wednesday, 20 May 2009
Nationwide research of over 2000 people in relationships has found that those who work in the tech sector are less selfish in bed and more open to using sex toys, whilst the same research also found that those who work in the fitness industry or were regular gym-goers were more likely to be selfish and think of their needs above their partner’s.
An anonymous study of 2,084 British men and women in relationships conducted by the UK’s leading independent PS3 videogame and console site has found a correlation between geeks and their openness to pleasing a partner in bed, with four in five agreeing that sex should be more about ‘the partner’, as opposed to people who worked in the sports and fitness industry where just 41% agreed.

rePost::The theory of optimal fines

The theory of optimal fines
A Swiss court has slapped a wealthy speeder with a chalet-sized fine — a full $290,000.
Judges at the cantonal court in St. Gallen, in eastern Switzerland, based the record-breaking fine on the speeder's estimated wealth of over $20 million.
A statement on the court's Web site says the driver — a repeat offender — drove up to 35 miles an hour (57 kilometers an hour) faster than the 50-mile-an-hour (80-kilometer-an-hour) limit.
Here is the full article and I thank Daniel Lippman for the pointer.
via Marginal Revolution: The theory of optimal fines.

This one is for ….. We need a law for this. We need to base the fines/court fees/other applicable fees of a person dependent on his/her ability to pay, with a minimum amount for people who can’t pay of course. But just think about it. how often do we see the rich and powerful doing things that we ordinary mortals dare not do.  Although this would probably be just another cash cow for the unscrupulous and corrupt. We could dream.

The magic moment

We have to take risks. We can only truly understand the miracle of life when we let the unexpected manifest itself.
Every day – together with the sun – God gives us a moment in which it is possible to change everything that makes us unhappy. Every day we try to pretend that we don’t realize that moment, that it doesn’t exist, that today is just the same as yesterday and will be the same as tomorrow. But if you pay attention, you can discover the magic instant.
It may be hiding at the moment when we put the key in the door in the morning, in the silence right after dinner, in the thousand and one things that all seem the same to us. This moment exists – a moment when all the strength of the stars passes through us and lets us work miracles.
Happiness is at times a blessing – but usually it’s a conquest. The magic instant helps us to change, drives us forward to seek our dreams. We shall suffer and go through quite a few difficult moments and face many a disappointment – but this is all transitory and inevitable, and eventually we shall feel proud of the marks left behind by the obstacles. In the future we will be able to look back with pride and faith.
Poor are those who are afraid of running risks. Because maybe they are never disappointed, never disillusioned, never suffer like those who have a dream to pursue. But when they look back – for we always look back – they will hear their heart saying: “What did you do with the miracles that God sowed for your days? What did you do with the talent that your Master entrusted to you? You buried it deep in a grave because you were afraid to lose it. So this is your inheritance: the certainty that you have wasted your life.”
Poor are those who hear these words. For then they will believe in miracles, but the magic instants of life will have already passed.
