rePost:Why the iPad is Revolutionary:Inkling lets textbook makers embrace the iPad | VentureBeat

Got this link from Marginal Revolutions blog. As I’ve said to some people; the iPad is perfect for me because I’ve been thinking of buying a Kindle for a long time. Now I’m still thinking what to buy; Paradox of Choice bites my behind.  I love reading, look at my blog and the rePosts I post are what maybe less than 5 percent of what I read.  The worst part of my day is the commute or the waiting for someone time. I’ve almost solved this by having a notebook always, having at least two books in the bag, and  having printed article to read. The problem is that it’s hard to write in a moving vehicle, and I find that I’d rather read articles/essays when I only have a  short time to read. I hate that I have to print reams upon reams of paper to combat boredom.  If money permits I’m buying both.

Textbooks are different animals than e-book novels and business books, in ways that current e-readers can’t handle. For starters, you don’t read a textbook’s pages serially from first to last. You need to be able to jump around, skip, skim, and flip back and forth between chapter review and chapter content. A textbook’s content should ideally be dynamic from year to year, not frozen in time like a novel.
inkling3The iPad makes it possible to replace static images with interactive puzzles that MacInnis says burn important concepts in to students’ brains better and longer. He showed me a demo learning module that explained the biological concept of cellular mitosis. It starts with a real microscope image of a cell. A caption, simultaneously spoken by a voiceover (They call this karaoke mode. It turns out to help memory better than either text or speech by itself) instructs me to tap the cells nucleus three times to simulate its breakdown. Further steps in the mitosis process require me to pinch, drag or swipe components in the cell after identifying them. When I’m done, I have a memory of having walked through the process physically, rather than just scanning an illustration with my eyes.
Existing texts can be embellished with tooltips, talking text, and interactive quizzes.
wait 2 secs to reload the imageBesides the interactive color format, Inkling’s technology goes beyond the Kindle and other readers by making it possible to hop around a book, to hand out individual chapters as assignments, and to take notes in highlighter yellow right on the text. The notes are sharable among a social network of students and instructor.
But the real breakthrough is in pricing. Instead of a $180 textbook, learning modules built with Inkling will be priced individually on iTunes, just as music and TV shows are. Instead of buying all 50 chapters of a 1,200-page biology book, an instructor can create a customized bundle of only the modules students will actually use. Pricing hasn’t been determined yet, but it’s likely to be a few dollars per unit — much cheaper than current textbooks. (Apple’s cut of book sales is said to be 30 percent.)

Praise::Christian Bautista offered to do TV series in Indonesia | ABS-CBN News Online Beta

Good for him.  We really need to export our artists/various media/various entertainment resources. This is one of the few ways we could possibly re-awaken the sleeping movie industry, take the music industry to the next level, and be the cultural capital of south east asia.  To do this even with the weakest economy compared to the countries that matter would be a great achievement.

MANILA, Philippine – Don’t be surprised if you see less of crooner Christian Bautista.
The singer recently announced that he got an offer to do a television series in Indonesia.
He also has to stay outside the country for a while to fulfill his numerous music commitments not only in Indonesia but in Malaysia as well, he added.
Thus, learning how to speak Bahasa fluently is a must, he said.
“Ngayon hahanapin ko ang mga kaibigan kong Malaysian dito sa Philippines para mag-aral talaga ako ng Bahasa kasi that's the only way. I'm very interested pero ipa-plano muna yon,” Bautista told ABS-CBN News.
Dubbed as “Asia's Pop Idol” and “Asia's Romantic Balladeer,” Bautista quickly clarified that his singing career is still his top priority.

RIP::Reclusive author J.D. Salinger dies at 91 | ABS-CBN News Online Beta

When I woke up earlier this morning I had a fever and a headache. I didn’t go to work and slept through the day.  I know it’s crazy but The Catcher in the Rye was a book I loved. The freakish part of me that feel that everything is connected somewhat believes that my being sick this whole friday may be in fact connected. RIP JD Salinger.

Funny:Jessica Zafra on Paano Na Kaya:18. What have we done to deserve this? | JessicarulestheUniverse

So Kim and Gerald play best friends since high school, Kim is a complete doormat for love, and Gerald has a few scenes in which he ruminates on life while standing in the shower. Yes, because the shower is the perfect place to ponder the big questions of life, particularly if you have those abs. Like the typical Star Cinema product no one has any real problems; what they really need is to have a strong cup of coffee and get over themselves.
…………..
But when the movie ended there was applause anyway, because all the audience really wants is to see Kim being pretty and Gerald being handsome. Nothing they don’t already see on TV. For free. I expect it will be a huge hit.

rePost::Merienda with a Nobel Laureate | Filipino Voices

Prof Wiesel advices Pinoy academics that these S&T incubators will only deliver its promise if the academics themselves adopt a more daring interdisciplinary view of things. This would imply a major shake up of how university bureaucracies are run which at present promotes departmental isolation. He suggests that academic departments and even the various UP campuses be daring enough to set up shop at the technohub (which should facilitate departments to collaboratively how to hatch projects). He gives the example of UP Manila’s health sciences research units. Medicine should not limit itself to clinical research but look into the potential of basic science research which can be incubated as new medical technologies. The best place to do that is in UP Diliman’s technohub since UP Diliman is strong in the basic natural sciences like physics, chem, biology and environment.

Learned Today::5 Whys – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hope I can test this while I still remember it, with something concrete that the technique get imprinted in my memory.

The 5 Whys is a question-asking method used to explore the cause/effect relationships underlying a particular problem. Ultimately, the goal of applying the 5 Whys method is to determine a root cause of a defect or problem.
The following example demonstrates the basic process:
* My car will not start. (the problem)
1. Why? – The battery is dead. (first why)
2. Why? – The alternator is not functioning. (second why)
3. Why? – The alternator belt has broken. (third why)
4. Why? – The alternator belt was well beyond its useful service life and has never been replaced. (fourth why)
5. Why? – I have not been maintaining my car according to the recommended service schedule. (fifth why, a root cause)

rePost:: Faith, Doubt and Modernity

This is an interesting take on faith today.

In short, modernity didn’t undermine the contents of religious belief. What modernity did was change the location of belief in the mind. Specifically, faith moved from the background to the foreground. From taken-for-granted to an object of choice.
And what this means is not that modernity has made faith unreasonable. But it does mean that faith is more fragile and unstable. As are all things in the foreground. The fact that faith is a choice means that faith can be revisited and the reasons behind that choice opened up to scrutiny. Further, we are constantly in contact with people making their own faith choices and can’t help but be affected by their reasons. No longer taken for granted, faith is always exposed to reflection and revisitation. When faith is a choice it needs to be reasserted, like all our other choices. It’s like waking up every morning and deciding what to wear. The choice is an everyday object in the mind. Thus, we need to keep choosing faith, over and over. And, like all things in the foreground, this take a lot of time and effort. Faith is now hard work. And some people, not surprisingly, just get tired.
In short, faith is going to feel different in modernity. It’s going to feel vulnerable and fragile. It’s going to be effortful. All this is simply saying that faith has moved from the background to the foreground.

rePost:: Introverts in the Church

But many churches fail to make this distinction. They tacitly set up the following equation for church life:
Spirituality = Sociability
For example, I was once visiting with a church leader at my church who was making a recommendation that, to make our adult classes more “meaningful,” we would need to share more of our lives in these classes. I stated that such a recommendation would drive the introverts crazy. The response was, “God is about relationships and church is about relationships. Thus, if these people aren’t going to be involved in relationships they will just have to change.”

rePost::A Rant About Women « Clay Shirky

read the whole thing!!!

Not caring works surprisingly well. Another of my great former students, now a peer and a friend, saw a request from a magazine reporter doing a tech story and looking for examples. My friend, who’d previously been too quiet about her work, decided to write the reporter and say “My work is awesome. You should write about it.”
The reporter looked at her work and wrote back saying “Your work is indeed awesome, and I will write about it. I also have to tell you you are the only woman who suggested her own work. Men do that all the time, but women wait for someone else to recommend them.” My friend stopped waiting, and now her work is getting the attention it deserves.
If you walked into my department at NYU, you wouldn’t say “Oh my, look how much more talented the men are than the women.” The level and variety of creative energy in the place is still breathtaking to me, and it’s not divided by gender. However, you would be justified in saying “I bet that the students who get famous five years from now will include more men than women”, because that’s what happens, year after year. My friend talking to the reporter remains the sad exception.
Part of this sorting out of careers is sexism, but part of it is that men are just better at being arrogant, and less concerned about people thinking we’re stupid (often correctly, it should be noted) for trying things we’re not qualified for.
