rePost::The Long View: In defense of Esperanza Cabral : Manuel L. Quezon III: The Daily Dose

I’ve bemoaned the lack of goodToGreat political blogs in the Philippines. Most tend to be ideologues and tend to bend over backward to defend their beliefs. Its refreshing to know that there is at least one High Quality blog in the Philippines about politics. Now if only I can find another 4  goodToGreat political blogs , I can finally start looking for goodToGreat Econ/Business blogs from the Philippines!

What struck me immediately about the controversial blog entry was that the problems the public has come to associate with officialdom and relief were notably absent. There was no pilfering, no looting, no diversion of relief to line official pockets. This, in itself, is a colossal achievement: the warehouses are secure, items are tidily kept and they presumably end up where they should. Another thing that struck me was that the secretary has proven true to her pledge to be transparent and accountable about donations: they are publicly available, on line, listing monetary donations, and donations in kind, and the disbursement of relief goods.

MANILA, Philippines-The Japanese government has allotted 3.350 billion yen grant to the Philippines to improve the country’s weather monitoring and dissemination system.
Foreign Affairs Secretary Alberto Romulo and Japanese Ambassador Makoto Katsura on Friday signed and exchanged Notes for the Project for Improvement of the Meteorological Radar System.
The project, to be implemented by Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration and the Department of Science and Technology (PAGASA-DOST) will involve among others, the replacement of the three existing Meteorological Radar Systems in Aparri, Cagayan; Virac, Catanduanes; and Guian, Samar, with new Doppler (S-band) radar systems, the Foreign Affairs department said.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) has signed an agreement with the South Korean government to develop warning systems for three disaster-prone areas in the Philippines.
Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Undersecretary Graciano Yumul Jr said the South Korean government will provide a grant of $1 million over 2007-2008 for the project. Pagasa is an attached agency of the DOST.
The Koreans will provide weather monitoring facilities in three sites: in Luzon, at the Aurora River Basin in Aurora province; in the Visayas, at the Jaluar River Basin in Iloilo; and in Mindanao, at the Lake Lanao-Agus River Basin in the Lanao provinces.
Yumul said the project sites were chosen because of their vulnerability to extreme climate events.
He added that the project components include the provision of facilities such as automatic weather stations (AWS), automatic rain gauges, digital water level gauges and maintenance vehicles along with the training of Filipino counterparts in South Korea and the sending of experts who will oversee the project.

rePost::Rich Germans want higher taxes | FP Passport

Hey friends what’s your over and under for this??
How many Rich people from the Philippines do you think would sign a petition such as this?

Rich Germans ask for higher taxes
Fri, 10/23/2009 – 4:12pm
They’re the kind of citizens any cash-starved government would want: a group of wealthy Germans have launched a petition this week calling for higher taxes on wealthy Germans. The group claims that Germany could raise €100 billion if the richest people paid a five percent wealth tax for two years.
Germany is not known as a low-tax country–tax revenues were 37% of GDP in 2007, in line with other EU countries, and above countries like South Korea (29%) and the United States (28%). The petitioners claim, though, that those who “made a fortune through inheritance, hard work, hard-working, successful entrepreneurship, or investment” should put their money into an economy that, while better off than some other EU counterparts, is still facing rising unemployment through next year.

Mexican 5th grader donates to flood victims

A donation of P2,451 may not be much, but victims of tropical cyclones “Ondoy” (Ketsana) and “Pepeng” (Parma) will find it meaningful since it came from a fifth-grade student from Mexico.
Young Alejandro Luna Flores told Philippine Ambassador to Mexico Alejandro Ortigas III he took the money right out of his “alkansiya” (piggy bank).
“(Flores called Ortigas) to express sympathy for the victims of typhoons ‘Ondoy’ and ‘Pepeng’ and to hand over a donation of $410 Mexican pesos (approximately P2,451 Philippine pesos) for Filipino children who are victims of the calamities,” the Department of Foreign Affairs said, citing a report from Ortigas.
The DFA said Alejandro, accompanied by his lawyer parents and his six-month-old brother, took the amount straight from his piggy bank during their meeting Oct. 9.
It said Alejandro developed an interest about the Philippines during a summer class and started collecting items about the Philippines, including P2 bills.
Alejandro told Ortigas in a letter that he is interested in Philippine history, and that the Chocolate Hills in Bohol are among his favorite tourist destinations.
“The young boy said he hopes to visit the Philippines someday,” the DFA said.
Ortigas said he intends to ask a friend in a chocolate and cookies business to match 100 times Alejandro’s donation, so it can benefit more Filipino children.

KIDAPAWAN CITY, Philippines—Large-scale commercial production of charcoal is now prohibited in the province of North Cotabato following the passage of an ordinance that regulates its production.
The ordinance was unanimously approved by the provincial legislators on Tuesday.
Provincial Ordinance No. 103 was introduced by North Cotabato 2nd district Board Member Van Cadungon, chairman of the committee on environment and natural resources.
Cadungon said the measure does not mean to scrap the local charcoal business or ban the use of charcoal in households as an alternative to oil and gas, but rather to prevent the large-scale production of charcoal for commercial and industrial purposes.

Senate cancels Christmas party; funds go to typhoon victims
AMITA LEGASPI, GMANews.TV

The Senate on Monday decided to cancel its annual Christmas party and instead, donate the funds intended for the festivity to help the victims of recent calamities.
Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile said the Senate employees themselves suggested the cancellation of the party.
“I commend our Senate employees and the Secretary of the Senate herself for being among the first to suggest, even as I was already preparing to announce it, to cancel our scheduled Christmas party and, instead, to just donate the budget for the Christmas celebration to the typhoon and flood victims,” Enrile said in a speech during the flag ceremony that marked the Philippine Senate’s 93rd anniversary.
The Senate, through its discretionary funds, earlier donated P500,000 each to GMA Kapuso Foundation, ABS-CBN Foundation, Inc., and the Philippine National Red Cross (PNRC) to support their ongoing efforts to provide immediate relief assistance for the typhoon victims. Also, the Senate welfare fund of P120,000 was donated and divided among the three organizations.
Enrile said the loss of lives and extensive damage to property caused by tropical cyclones Ondoy, Pepeng, and Quedan require immediate actions and cooperation from all fronts in providing relief assistance to the victims and “we know that these organizations have the appropriate machinery to provide such.”
The amount collected by the Senate Public Assistance Center (PAC) will also be used to purchase goods for the barangays, which are in dire need of assistance as identified by the Senate Ad Hoc Committee on tropical storm Ondoy. – GMANews.TV

Praise To Commitment::48 Minutes of Hell » Blog Archive » In Appreciation of Peter Holt

Brave Peter Holt! This is why San Antonio has been a model franchise for mre than a decade! The Right people doing the right things!

Peter Holt took a serious financial hit yesterday and he did so for the good of the franchise you love.
It’s hard to feel sympathy for a man whose net worth is counted not just in millions but in tens of millions, but compare Holt’s situation to Mark Cuban’s, whose net worth is presumed to be north of $2 billion, and you begin to recognize the commitment Holt is making to the franchise. When the Mavericks head into the luxury tax, Cuban hardly feels the prick of a pin. Holt and the rest of the Spurs ownership group commit a significant fraction of the franchise’s net worth to the team’s success.
Mr. Holt’s financial commitment to the team is significant to no one more than the 3 individuals we adore most: Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili, and Tony Parker. Whether by only requesting reasonable contracts or restructuring their contracts to allow the team to acquire the necessary supporting cast, over the last several years the big three have done their part to ensure the Spurs are in a position to compete for championships. By allowing the front office to take the steps they took today, Holt has kept up his end of the bargain.
