Praise::Quentin Tarantino Keeps A Classic Movie Theater Open; Who’ll Save the Rest of the Country’s Indie Theaters? | /Film

What is the equivalent term for film of “petrol heads” (car lovers)? If your in the US check out the indie film theaters that may be near where you are.
I’m curios what’s the equivalent of that in Metro Manila? UP Film Center? I used to think so till the people who make moralistic an evil word MTRCB lawyer and head clamped down on Cine Adarna’s privilege to be a place where censorship does not exist. I pray the next MTRCB chief knows how valuable a place where boundaries can be explored and push outward.

The New Beverly Cinema in Los Angeles is a great place to see a movie. Not because it is the most comfortable theater or the most state of the art, but because it is operated and attended by people who really love movies. I’ve only been there a few times, but the experiences have been great: seeing Wet Hot American Summer with David Wain in attendance, A Nightmare on Elm Street 3 with Frank Darabont and Chuck Russell, and catching a marathon of three Friday the 13th flicks.
Quentin Tarantino bought the New Beverly when it fell on hard times, but his involvement with the theater has been known in detail only to some of the most dedicated friends and patrons of the business. Now Tarantino and the family that runs the theater are talking about the process of keeping it alive.
THR has a long report on the process that began when Quentin Tarantino offered financial help to Sherman Torgan, once the New Bev’s operator. He started giving the theater $5000 per month to keep it open. But when Sherman Torgan passed away in 2007, the theater faced closure, prompting Tarantino to buy the space outright. “I always considered the New Beverly my charity,” he says, “an investment I never wanted back.”
Tarantino said one thing of his ownership of the New Bev that really sums it up how grand his patronage of the long-running movie house really is:
As long as I’m alive, and as long as I’m rich, the New Beverly will be there, showing double features in 35mm.
Now this is the place where I have to lecture. Did you read this story and think, “wow, that’s awesome”? If so, and you have a local indie house that you don’t visit on a regular basis, what’s wrong with you?

Got this from jayson through facebook. In some ways I can no longer be impartial about this issue primarily because whenever emotions are involved the mind almost always takes a backseat. I was bale to see the interview of one of the children, of one of the doctors who were jailed.  The words were something like “Para na nga sa amin , kukunin pa para itulong sa ibang tao..” said in a tone equal parts admiration and hurt.  Ewan , hope more people are as selfless as those doctors , rebels or not.

MANILA, Philippines—The rain on a health workers’ training workshop in Morong, Rizal, and the arrest of 43 health professionals and workers continue to be front-page news.
The other night on the TV program “Crossroads,” Lt. Col. Noel Detoyato, spokesperson of the Armed Forces’ 2nd Infantry Division, noted that the workshop participants generally had low educational attainment, and cited this as one reason why they were suspected as subversives. Detoyato even enumerated the participants’ educational profile: 5 had elementary education, 4 were elementary graduates, 7 had high school education, 12 were high school graduates, 5 had college education and 4 were college graduates. He then mentioned that one of the participants had only finished first grade, and that this person was wanted for murder.
The colonel’s revelations reflect society’s prejudice against people who have had little formal education. “Uneducated” means ignorant, with connotations of the criminal and the subversive. Moreover, in this case of the health workers, there is the insinuation that the “uneducated’ (read the poor) couldn’t become health workers.
Yet for nearly half a century now, there has been a quiet global revolution going on, where people with minimal education have become excellent community health workers. In the Philippines, such training dates back to the early 1970s, when Filipino health professionals put up community-based health programs (CBHPs) with community health worker (CW) training as its centerpiece.
The Filipino CBHPs drew inspiration from China’s health care system, one which built upwards from the communes and villages. A hallmark of the Chinese system was the training of barefoot doctors, so-called because many had minimal formal education. Yet, with training of six months to a year the barefoot doctors could handle many of the most important health needs in their villages. Some eventually went on to medical school. One of them, Chen Zhu, rose through the ranks to become minister of health.

Praise::A ‘nosebleed’ triumph for Gloc 9 | Manila Bulletin

Congratulations to Gloc-9 !!!!

Silently seated somewhere at the back of the invitees’ area, Gloc 9 stood and went up the stage to receive his trophy. He was certainly aware that most awardees were delivering their short speeches in English. So with a probably planned punchline, he uttered on the mic, “Kanina pa dumudugo ang ilong ko so tatagalugin ko na lang. Salamat.”
With that, the male hip-hop winner received loud applauses. It was obvious he delivered the one-liner with proper timing, like most of his rhymes and comic sarcasms in his recorded verses. Gloc 9 was just being cool, not a bit sounding trying to put one over people belonging to the elite club scene.
His line might have been the unlikeliest heard that night. But big thanks he already earned enough respect as an intelligent Tagalog rapper, for it would have been different had an unknown or overrated artist said the same thing.
Granted he really nosebleed during the entire affair, especially with all the Fil-Ams, Amboys, and rich kids around, he still triumphed using the language he’s more comfortable with.

Praise::Christian Bautista offered to do TV series in Indonesia | ABS-CBN News Online Beta

Good for him.  We really need to export our artists/various media/various entertainment resources. This is one of the few ways we could possibly re-awaken the sleeping movie industry, take the music industry to the next level, and be the cultural capital of south east asia.  To do this even with the weakest economy compared to the countries that matter would be a great achievement.

Christian Bautista offered to do TV series in Indonesia

MANILA, Philippine – Don’t be surprised if you see less of crooner Christian Bautista.
The singer recently announced that he got an offer to do a television series in Indonesia.
He also has to stay outside the country for a while to fulfill his numerous music commitments not only in Indonesia but in Malaysia as well, he added.
Thus, learning how to speak Bahasa fluently is a must, he said.
“Ngayon hahanapin ko ang mga kaibigan kong Malaysian dito sa Philippines para mag-aral talaga ako ng Bahasa kasi that's the only way. I'm very interested pero ipa-plano muna yon,” Bautista told ABS-CBN News.
Dubbed as “Asia's Pop Idol” and “Asia's Romantic Balladeer,” Bautista quickly clarified that his singing career is still his top priority.

rePost::Marc Webb To Direct New Spider-Man Trilogy!? | /Film

I loved watching 500 days of summer and really wanted film makers like Marc Webb who has a sense of ; style and vision, and the chops to execute. I feel that a lot of film makers are found in extremes, between trying to please only themselves and to please most people, or the other extremes trying to please movie studio execs.  I hope Marc Webb does the reboot well, is a christopher nolan too much to ask from this obviously talented director? I hope not. I came in with high expectations when I watched 500 days of summer, too high, yet I was not let down.

Last week it was reported that (500) Days of Summer helmer Marc Webb was at the top of the list of candidates to helm a Spider-Man reboot. Vulture now has breaking word that Webb is signed on to direct, not only the Spider-Man reboot, but a new Spider-Man trilogy. That’s right, three movies!
The reboot allows Sony to clean house of all the high price-tag cast and crew from the original trilogy. Webb will be paid roughly $10 million for the first film, with reported substantial bonuses built in “if the picture reaches certain box-office milestones.” Sam Raimi was paid $10 million for the original Spider-Man film, but that was nearly ten years ago. The Evil Dead director’s agreement included a percentage of the film’s grosses (nearly 25 percent when combined with star Tobey Maguire on the last sequel).
