Andy Bowen, project manager and principal developer of the Nereus, an ROV that explored Challenger Deep in 2009, said a manned mission also has the potential to inspire public imagination in a way a robot can’t.
“It’s difficult to anthropomorphize machines in a way that engages everyone’s imagination—not in the same way that having boots on the ground, so to speak, can do,” said Bowen, who’s not an expedition member.
Biological oceanographer Lisa Levin, also at Scripps, said that the DEEPSEA CHALLENGE program’s potential for generating public interest in deep-ocean science is as important as any new species Cameron might have discovered.
“I consider Cameron to be doing for the trenches what Jacques Cousteau did for the ocean many decades ago,” said Levin, who’s part of the team but did not participate in the seagoing expedition.
At a time of fast-shrinking funds for undersea research, “what scientists need is the public support to be able to continue exploration and research of the deep ocean,” Levin said.

Perhaps referring to his friend’s most recent movie, expedition physician MacInnis called Cameron a real-world “avatar.”
“He’s down there on behalf of everybody else on this planet,” he said. “There are seven billion people who can’t go, and he can. And he’s aware of that.”
For his part, Cameron seems sure that the DEEPSEA CHALLENGER will be exploring the depths for a long time to come. In fact, he’s so confident in his star vehicle, he started mulling sequels even before today’s trench dive.
Phase two might include adding a thin fiber-optic tether to the ship, which “would allow science observers at the surface to see the images in real time,” said Cameron, a National Geographic Society explorer-in-residence.

It was without a doubt, a drama worth telling. Carlos Celdran was questioned of his performative tour and was distanced to the Art Dubai hallway in order to finish his on-going tour. With everyone’s amazement, the content of his tour was scrutinized. He was ordered to do his act in front of five men in a close door room where they justify if Carlos somehow talks of Arab nations. As he was released he was told to alter any religious and political content of his tour.
I remember in one of his stop, Carlos talked about the Tripoli Peace Agreement between former Libya leader Ghaddafi and Mrs. Imelda Marcos. In that particular context Carlos told his audience that Mrs. Marcos held a Koran with her as she spoke these words to Ghadafi “Islam is all about peace, but if you are funding a war in my country you are turning Filipino to fight against Filipino, you are also turning Muslim to fight against Muslim. If you are doing this, how then are you following Mohammed?”

We, the supporters, volunteers and friends of former Defense Secretary Gilberto “Gibo” Teodoro, vow to uphold the principles of POSITIVE CAMPAIGNING this election season. These principles shall unite us and guide us through this adventure that has brought us all together, inspire us throughout this journey, and lead us to victory.
We recognize, we believe, we affirm:
– that we have chosen our CANDIDATE because he represents what is best and excellent in all of us, because he champions our greatness rather than our mediocrity, because he is a visionary of means and not just a dreamer of ends, because we recognize the potential in him just as we recognize the potential in ourselves;
– that our VOTE is sacred. We do not take our vote for granted, for we are aware that millions around the world do not enjoy the privilege of electing their own leaders, and therefore do not have a say in mapping out their own destiny. Our vote ennobles us, reminds us that we can choose, we can decide and we can exercise our freedom to evolve our democracy to greater heights, as we give our full support to leaders who can serve the highest ideals of democracy;

MANILA, Philippines—A man was hacked to death with a Samurai sword as he tried to patch things up between two men who were arguing on a street named Peaceful in a depressed area in Quezon City, police4 said Saturday.
The victim, Alvin Afable, died of several hack and stab wounds sustained in the incident, which happened at around 6 p.m. on Peaceful St. in Area 4, in the village of Bagong Silangan.
Police said Afable, 24, was simply trying to mediate between two men having an argument when a brother of one of the men arrived and mistook him for an enemy.
Chief Inspector Benjamin Elenzano Jr of the Quezon City Police District’s Criminal Investigation and Detection Unit said they were able to arrest one of the brothers, identified as Raymund Bongalesa, 29.
Bongalesa’s older brother, 31-year-old Ryan, allegedly came in defense of his brother and mistook Afable as one of the men Raymund was arguing with, Elenzano said.

MANILA, Philippines – (UPDATE 3) Filipino boxing icon Manny Pacquiao made history Sunday (Manila time) when he bagged the welterweight title, his seventh in as many divisions, via technical knockout of Puerto Rican Miguel Cotto, the reigning champion in that division.
Kenny Bayless, the referee of the match, stopped the fight at 2:04-minute mark of the 12th round declaring Pacquiao the winner in the fight held at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Pacquiao bucked a size disadvantage against Cotto on his way to becoming the first fighter to win world titles in seven divisions.
Pacquiao has won the world championships in the flyweight (112 pounds), super bantamweight (122 lb), featherweight (126 lb), super featherweight (130 lb), lightweight (135 lb), and light welterweight (140 lb).
No man has won seven world titles in seven weight divisions and only five boxers have won six – Pacquiao, Oscar de la Hoya, Thomas Hearns, Hector Camacho, and James Toney.

MANILA, Philippines – The 21st day of a sea adventure aboard the “balangay” precolonial boat turned into an impromptu rescue mission as the intrepid crew rolled into a remote island off Romblon Monday and came upon an old woman on the brink of death.On the island of Maestro de Campo, the balangay expedition members saved 68-year-old Aurora Tomining, who was suffering from a heart condition coupled with pneumonia, team leader Art Valdez said in a phone call to the Inquirer.“She was in very critical condition when we came. There was no hospital on the island, and the last time a doctor was here was one year ago,” he said.An emergency rescue operation was launched with the help of Capt. Ferdinand Velasco and his crew aboard Coast Guard search-and-rescue vessel no. 3502, Valdez said.“She had to be flown in by helicopter to Manila. I heard she was already in Manila by Tuesday,” he said.
