World War II Memorial and Washington Monument

This is great news for those still living and probably scornful for those who have already left but still has surviving spouses. Something is better than nothing. On a personal note, my grandfather never accepted anything pensions etc, he was a WW2 veteran, He used to tell me he did it because of his duty to the country and not for anything else, that may sentimentality is impractical but I confess being an impractical man (sometimes)

MANILA, Philippines — Only living Filipino World War II veterans will receive the lump sum payments from the United States, the Department of Veterans’ Affairs section of the American embassy said Tuesday.
“The bill has not yet been signed into law. All we know is that only live Filipino veterans who served in World War II or who have military service are entitled to [the payments], not their surviving spouse. That is our instruction from the central office,” veterans’ representative Kristine Parayno said in a phone interview with INQUIRER.net.
Parayno said their office has not yet received the list of those who can avail of the payments of the procedures for filing claims.
The US Congress passed on Friday President Barack Obama’s $787-billion stimulus package, which included a $198-million allocation for the Filipino veterans.
The bill, which is scheduled to be signed Tuesday in Denver, would grant $9,000 to Filipino veterans living outside the US and $15,000 to those living there.

-Shovel Ready Projects For Filipino Stimulus-Jobless Filipinos to plant trees – INQUIRER.net, Philippine News for Filipinos

some caveats:
This type of stimulus is actually more of a way to help the poorest of the poor survive. A way to transfer necessary cash so the super below poverty line people have a way to feed themselves. This makes me think that it is more aptly called a poverty aleviation stopgap.
The AFP called the government department, ministries. This probably means that the editor/copy editor/proof reader forgot that this is going to be read by filipinos. If they were aiming for a more International bent and that caused them to change departments to ministry, I feel that they should not have.
The environmentalist in me is very happy!

MANILA, Philippines—President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo is to pay 180,000 people to plant trees across the archipelago as part of efforts to ease the fallout from the global economic meltdown, the government said Thursday.
The P7 billion ($148.7 million) program, to be put in place over the next six months, will be funded by government ministries, Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita told reporters.
More than 15,000 people have lost their jobs in the Philippines over the past two months, mostly in the crucial electronics and garments sectors, amid plunging demand for Filipino exports.

CLARK FREEPORT, Philippines – Texas Instruments, Inc. (TI), the world’s largest manufacturer of semiconductors, is expected to operate early June here, belying reports that it will abandon its plant, leaving some 3,000 job applicants in limbo.
Clark Development Corp. (CDC) president and chief executive officer Benigno Ricafort said that TI’s $1.5-billion plant is almost complete. “Equipment and other facilities, which will be used for its operations, have been delivered to its new building.”
“Some 100 of its personnel in Baguio are expected to be here to train the new workers,” he said.
He said that despite the effects of the US economic meltdown, TI would be able to employ some 3,000 workers, but gradually. “I don’t think there has been any change in that (plan),” he added.

Its boring but I have decided that this year I’ll give most people the same birthday gift. After reading Para Kay B about two weeks ago I decided that it is my default gift for this year. Great to hear that buying the book means helping other writers bring their works to life!

Ricky Lee puts up foundation for aspiring, struggling writers

FOUNDATION FOR WRITERS.
Yung nobelang naisulat ko, yung Para Kay B, after that, may dalawa pa akong nobelang ilalabas this year.
“Para siyang MOWELFUND for writers.

rePost -The True Cost of Credit – Freakonomics Blog – NYTimes.com

From personal experience the places where it is cheapest to buy stuff, only accepts cash transactions. Talking to one store owner it is because of the credit card company’s cut.

I was surprised at how high the fees were. For instance, in this example of a Mastercard, when you buy a $1.50 pack of gum at a convenience store, the credit-card company gets 28 cents. Even on big-ticket items like airline tickets, the credit-card company collects nearly 3 percent.
This is not to say that there is anything wrong with those fees. I presume that the issuing banks can choose their own fees (within reason), and that there is more or less free entry — which suggests that the industry should be pretty competitive. Merchants accept credit cards, which implies that the benefits of doing so outweigh the costs.
