Fate is…..

Let’s say that I was really depressed yesterday but It was fortunate that we were going to watch Monsters Vs Aliens at the IMAX theater and we just walked around mall of asia. (We being me chuck vince and marc). We went home at around 9:30 and I was really very sleepy, luckily marc read this on the headrest of the seat a few rows in front of our seat(at the back of the bus). I recognized it instantly, and what follows is what I pictured in my minds eyes as the mystery surrounding this act of vandalism that really cheered me up.
Scene at the back of a jackpherlyn bus:
A girl looks far outside the large bus windows as the bus traverses the Diosdado Macapagal Boulevard. It is already late in the afternoon and the sun is slowly setting and at the moment was directly perched aone of the peaks of the Mall Of Asia structure.
The bus stops frequently because it is a slow day, april 6; The Bataan/ Araw ng Kagitingan Holiday has been moved to monday, and most people were either enjoying thier houses, out of town or are still at the malls.
A lady with really large face hugging shades is slowly humming the song “I believe”, we know nothing about this woman, she has a small frame and wearing the typical summer shorts and bright green top that was either a short very short one piece dress or a retro circa 1980’s top that went well with leggings.  Her glasses are all fogged up. She keeps saying to herself as if trying to convince herself that it is true “fate is….”.
A man with round features tinge with a roughness that stems from a sense of organized unkemptness. He is obviously out of it.  (probably a girl told him that she’s just not into you at all (sorry him, I was thinking of a friend (ouch),  no really (and double ouch))).
He sits down beside her it’s the only seat left in the bus and he of course takes it. Sits down dazed, unconsciously rolling/twidlling a marker/pen. It’s like he is existing in another dimension prallel to this one. It seems he is living in a bubble. His face moves , he has good hearing , then he writes “building bridges of chance for someone you love”.
She stops speaking. she turns her head slowly, as if caught stealing something.
He looks down, seemingly interested in every minute detail of his black chuck taylors. Not really aware that someone is looking at him. He drops the pen. He tries to retrieve it.
She sees him lose the pen, she tries to retrieve it.
Thier hands touch. Thier eyes meet. He says HI!, She says Hello!

The Office (US TV series)
Image via Wikipedia

I couldn’t agree more.  People are just so fucking annoyed with two bit, multi faced interactions that it is personally dragging to interact with people. I remember this scene from “The Office” probably season4. Where Kelly kapoor and Darryl from the warehouse fights and kelly says. “I don’t understand him who says exactly what he means!” can’t help but feel this when talking to people I interact with hesistantly. What I mean is I tend to hang with simple people , people like darryl.  Call shit on me when I am shitting them, tear me a new one when I am getting too arrogant and all in all telling me when; Incidentally If i had only listened to them a couple of weeks ago, I probably would not be depressed and extremely fragile right now. I am like a tinderbox ready to explode any second.  Well to sum up, try to minimize the fog, speak simply and clearly, tell it to me straight and we will get along fine! In some ways I don’t like erecting walls that separate , but this is very important to me. Enough of the lies, enough of the deception tell it straight!

Which means that even if you have a really good reason, no, you can’t call me on the phone. Which means that even if it’s really important, no, I’m not going to read the instructions. Which means that god forbid you try to email me something I didn’t ask for… you’re trashed. It’s so fashionable to be skeptical now that no one believes you if you attempt to do something for the right reasons.
Selfish short-sighted marketers ruined it for all of us. The only way out, I think, is for a few marketers to so overwhelm the market with long-term, generous marketing that we have no choice but to start paying attention again.

Gambling man

… You are lucky in billiards. hehehe.
Just got back from playing billiards with my office mates , and for the first time since forever I had the most wins! woot woot!
Now , maybe I should start playing poker and try my luck, maybe the old filipino saying (unlucky in love, lucky in gambling) would do its trick and help me win!

There was not a single class that I didn’t sleep on in college. The problem was I had this bad habit of sitting in the first or second row. If I had professors as easily offended as the one in this article , I would not have passed any of my subject! Hehe, good thing I had such wonderful professors!

Sleepy student barred from taking final exams
AIE BALAGTAS SEE, GMANews.TV 03/19/2009 | 11:24 PM
MANILA, Philippines – A second-year college student in Manila was barred from taking the final examinations by her professor after she was caught sleeping during a lecture, a television report said Thursday.
In his report on GMA News’ “24 Oras,” JP Soriano said Elizabeth Balitaan, a student of La Consolacion College, has admitted falling asleep while her Finance professor Ronald Pastrana was lecturing, but said it was due to a headache.
Balitaan said she tried talking to Pastrana but he refused to listen to her.
“Kinausap ko na po siya. Sinundan ko siya sa Dean’s Office tapos hindi niya ako pinansin. Tapos failed na daw po ako [kasi] parang nakakabastos daw ang ginawa ko,” Balitaan said.
[I tried talking to him but he won’t listen to me. He told me to consider myself failed for sleeping in the class.]
Balitaan was later allowed to take the exam by the school administration, the report said.
The incident however upset Balitaan’s mother, who went to see Pastrana to discuss the problem.
Pastrana, for his part, said he did not allow Balitaan to take the examination because she missed a lot in the lecture.

rePost:Business and Snake's Oil Men:Linus' blog: SSD followup

I wrote this yesterday about my take on business and snake’s oil sales men and realize that sometimes they are not trying to fool you into a decision.  It is sad but sometimes people don’t try to think things through and investigate the stuff they are trying to say. Here Linus Torvalds shows us why a lot of reviews cannot be trusted, and judging from the way he says this I believe he is even referring to some people who are said to be professional reviewers. Things like this used to make me sad, then I realized that when something becomes useless they tend to become irrelevant to people and they tend to be cast off, like a year old fad. The thing is we need to try to live more aware of things and try to always go beyond what is obvious and easy to get. Do not subscribe to labels and pre conceptions, exercise that which we have that makes us more than animals!

Sadly, almost none of the reviews seemed to ever catch on to that, as they were all looking at the (totally irrelevant) throughput numbers that basically don’t matter in any real-life situation. Everybody just quoted the nice big marketing numbers, because finding the numbers that matter more to actual human perception (notably: average and maximum latency) was so much harder, and most disk benchmarks are crap and don’t even give those numbers.
Which is why I was so happy to see this review at AnandTech. Half the numbers quoted are still the worthless ones (I guess you can’t avoid quoting the industry standard benchmarks, even when they are horribly bad), but much of the actual discussion is about how unusable a drive is when it has maximum latencies in the hundreds of milliseconds.

rePost:Public Transpo Rant!:Business – Prius to hit Philippine roads by June – INQUIRER.net

2004-2007 Toyota Prius photographed in USA.

The mortgage of my parents latest vehicle is going to be paid by next year that’s why in total consumer cliche behavior we are beginning to think of our next car. The Prius is probably going to be very expensive hope my parents can afford it. As for me. Public transport is still the best way to bring people with the least amount of carbon emissions and gas usage. I may only be one but I vote with my peso and ride only the best busses to promote investment in this underserved sector of the Philippine services part of the GDP. Hope more people do because as long as we tolerate overburdened, second rate, second hand 20 year old buses from Japan, people who can buy cars would always prefer buying one.
If public transport:
-ran just a little late (10 minute car ride becomes 20, versus the now, 10 car ride is an hour ),
-meant I get to sit down during rush hours(versus the forced to stand up)
-meant standard fares and intelligible fare matrices, so I don’t get irritated by rider and bus conductors fighting over 1-4 peso difference in fare.
-meant exclusive lanes or congestion pricing. Because the volume of traffic in manila is unsustainable and old cars are just too cheap, we must discourage these jalopy or at least level the playing field. I like the way Singapore handles this. You have to have a garage and your car can only be used for a fixed number of years.
-meant less pollution , which means the Department Of Health would no longer warn the public from biking to work because of the health risk associated with lung/repiratory diseases.
I could go on but I detect a mild rantiness in my writing probably due to me being very sick with fever and flu yesterday, and the ton of work I have to Do

I’ve got a beef with this title! World Economy to shrink below zero is obviously eye catching. You have a feeling that it is about growth but you have to read the second paragraph to be sure. This is shoddy writing!

rePost:Closed and Skeptical Minds : Musicians, drunks, and Oliver Cromwell — The Endeavour

INFINIT

I forgot from what blog I got the advice but I remember distinctly an advice I got that said “be wary with people who say impossible” or something to that effect.  I realize now after reading this post from chuck’s shared items what that really meant.
People who love or are in a habit of saying impossible is more probably of the closed/skeptical mind type, there is nothing wrong with being skeptical but there is for me something wrong with being close minded. When you are close minded you are living a life ruled by bias that you may or may no longer know how you came about having. When you live like this for a long time you end up with outdated/no longer true beliefs/ideas.
Why? This is because the world changes so fast and if you are not aware of a lot of the reason(like the previous post a lot of the evidence that influence our beliefs are somewhat invisible to us) you think/act a certain way you maybe doing something that is going against what you originally intended to do or achieve.
The take away in my view is three things:
-Try to journal what is influencing your thoughts.
-Constantly reexamine beliefs to understand if these beliefs/actions/habits are already outdated and should be stopped.
-Finally creating your own personal framework to make this as normal as breathing!

Dennis Lindley coined the term “Cromwell’s rule” for the advice that nothing should have zero prior probability unless it is logically impossible. The name comes from a statement by Oliver Cromwell addressed to the Church of Scotland:

I beseech you, in the bowels of Christ, think it possible that you may be mistaken.

In probabilistic terms, “think it possible that you may be mistaken” corresponds to “don’t give anything zero prior probability.” If an event has zero prior probability, it will have zero posterior probability, no matter how much evidence is collected. If an event has tiny but non-zero prior probability, enough evidence can eventually increase the posterior probability to a large value.
The difference between a small positive prior probability and a zero prior probability is the difference between a skeptical mind and a closed mind.

rePost: Clinging to Ignorance:Real Dan Lyons Web Site » Blog Archive Quite possibly the greatest high school English paper of all time «

One guy got hung up on the notion that Whitman was gay, and therefore refused to discuss the work and made a point of asking me, at the end of class, whether he needed to keep the poems for any reason, and when I told him no, he made a big point of tossing the poems into the trash in front of me. That was depressing enough, but the truly depressing part wasn’t that my “students” (I use the term very loosely) didn’t appreciate Whitman. The truly depressing part was that many of them, nearly all of them, could not comprehend Whitman. And I don’t mean they didn’t understand the imagery. I mean they could not read the sentences and parse them for meaning. They could not understand, from line to line, what was going on in a poem. These students had graduated from high school and were attending university. It was terrifying. Worse yet, they were obstinate about their ignorance, determined to cling to it, resistant to any attempts to help them understand how to read sentences in their own native language. In short, they liked being ignorant. They were proud of it.

There is nothing wrong with highlighted (by me) text, just felt that when a century is 8 years++ old its like stating a milestone that really isn’t.

Executives at Manulife Financial Corporation (MFC/TSX) said they would use the funding from the country’s six largest lenders to help the insurer withstand one of the worst financial crises of the century.
