Cause-oriented
artists’ group slams MTRCB for “X” rating
The Concerned Artists of the Philippines (CAP)
joins the local film, media and creative communities in lambasting the
so-called Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) for
reverting to open fascism when it slapped an “X” rating on two films
for AmBisyon 2010 of local cable channel ANC.
This MTRCB action bares once again the repressive
soul of this relic of an agency from the martial law regime of decades past.
Under Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, the MTRCB has been at its most ferocious since
1986, effectively censoring the most number of films with “X” ratings
for the narrow partisan purposes of the power-hungry few. These strikedowns
expose to all and sundry the basic deceit that the MTRCB is merely a review and
classification agency.
The MTRCB should have long been sent to the dustbin
of history along with the martial law dictatorship. Its existence wantonly
violates the bold mandate of the constitution to protect freedom of expression
as an inalienable right not to be suppressed by prior restraint that the MTRCB
signifies as an institution. That Congress has not come out with a law
abolishing it 23 years after our people ratified a fundamental law with a
superior Bill of Rights speaks of the actual insensitivity to democracy of
those who have ruled the legislature and government all these years.
CAP had worked with many of today’s generation of
rising filmmakers in lobbying the passage of House Bill 6425 outlawing the
MTRCB. But this has languished under a Congress obsessed with the Arroyo
clique’s ploys to prolong itself in power.
The Arroyo regime has shown by this single act
against Philippine culture that it does not deserve at all being hosts to our
country being made this and next year’s ASEAN’s cultural capital. It is an
insult to ASEAN and the peoples of this region’s countries that the chosen
epitome of their colorful cultures would exhibit such a deep lack of respect
for cultural and creative expression.
We laud world-class Filipino filmmakers Jeffrey
Jeturian and Brillante Mendoza for holding their ground in asserting their
filmic portrayal of a country sadly lost to the mad dogs of greed and
powerlust. This MTRCB action pointedly proves the urgency of why their films
and others of similar nature ought to be made and broadcast in conscience. It
also pointedly proves why this year’s elections is all about removing the
U.S.-Arroyo regime from power.
CAP is thus intent in being part of the protests
against this abominable act of “X” ratings against the two AmBisyon
films. We likewise urge fellow Filipinos to do so, and make this season a time
to reclaim our country from the detestable Arroyo regime. ##

rePost :: Robert De Niro Cast as Vince Lombardi | /Film

Haven’t seen a great performance from Robert De Niro in a long time. Hope he can make something of this role!

Robert De Niro has signed to play legendary football coach Vince Lombardi in ESPN Films’ big screen feature Lombardi. Academy Award-winning screenwriter Eric Roth (Forrest Gump, Munich, Benjamin Button, The Insider) penned the script. The National Football League is involved in the project, which means we probably won’ see anything controversial in the movie (steroids, alcohol).
I don’t know a lot about football, but looking at photos of Lombardi, you can certainly see how De Niro would be cast in the role. Risky Business says the plan is to release the film between the AFC and NFC conference championship games and the Super Bowl in 2012. The film will focus on Lombardi’s Green Bay Packers years, although ESPN acquired the entire life rights to Lombardi’s story from his estate, as well as the rights to Jerry Kramer and Dick Schaap’s book Instant Replay.

Praise::Quentin Tarantino Keeps A Classic Movie Theater Open; Who’ll Save the Rest of the Country’s Indie Theaters? | /Film

What is the equivalent term for film of “petrol heads” (car lovers)? If your in the US check out the indie film theaters that may be near where you are.
I’m curios what’s the equivalent of that in Metro Manila? UP Film Center? I used to think so till the people who make moralistic an evil word MTRCB lawyer and head clamped down on Cine Adarna’s privilege to be a place where censorship does not exist. I pray the next MTRCB chief knows how valuable a place where boundaries can be explored and push outward.

The New Beverly Cinema in Los Angeles is a great place to see a movie. Not because it is the most comfortable theater or the most state of the art, but because it is operated and attended by people who really love movies. I’ve only been there a few times, but the experiences have been great: seeing Wet Hot American Summer with David Wain in attendance, A Nightmare on Elm Street 3 with Frank Darabont and Chuck Russell, and catching a marathon of three Friday the 13th flicks.
Quentin Tarantino bought the New Beverly when it fell on hard times, but his involvement with the theater has been known in detail only to some of the most dedicated friends and patrons of the business. Now Tarantino and the family that runs the theater are talking about the process of keeping it alive.
THR has a long report on the process that began when Quentin Tarantino offered financial help to Sherman Torgan, once the New Bev’s operator. He started giving the theater $5000 per month to keep it open. But when Sherman Torgan passed away in 2007, the theater faced closure, prompting Tarantino to buy the space outright. “I always considered the New Beverly my charity,” he says, “an investment I never wanted back.”
Tarantino said one thing of his ownership of the New Bev that really sums it up how grand his patronage of the long-running movie house really is:
As long as I’m alive, and as long as I’m rich, the New Beverly will be there, showing double features in 35mm.
Now this is the place where I have to lecture. Did you read this story and think, “wow, that’s awesome”? If so, and you have a local indie house that you don’t visit on a regular basis, what’s wrong with you?

rePost::Natalie Portman's lesbian terror | ABS-CBN News Online Beta

Promise, I wouldn’t watch it just for the liplock. ehehe.

Natalie Portman was “terrified” when she had to kiss Mila Kunis in her new movie “Black Swan.”
The actress has a steamy same-sex scene with the “Max Payne” star in the supernatural thriller and admits she struggled to overcome her nerves before locking lips with another lady.
She said: “I was terrified. At the moment I lived in a state of inner terror.”
Portman – who previously shot a nude scene for short film 'Hotel Chevalier' – is also worried the lesbian sex sequence is overshadowing the plot of the film and worries it will make her be taken less seriously as an actress.
She added: “Nudity is something absolutely natural and I'm not prudish – but in a film it can be distracting. Doing 'Black Swan' I couldn't say no. The project is a huge opportunity for me to show a new me. I can't always play the nice mothers. My other problem is that single pictures are being taken out of context and put on the internet.”

Film::Of the feel of theaters and audiences, and eight films from Sundance – Roger Ebert's Journal

I first heard of two films that I loved watching in the after Sundance blog posts. These films I loved are “Brick” and “500 Days of Summer” (If only “The Assassination of a Highschool President” took of, but it seems it was too close to brick that it wasn’t viewed as favourably by distributors). This is why as friend jason said we were one of the first to get excited about “500 Days of Summer”. Hope I can be at Sundance one day (Keep On Dreaming). This is a nice primer from favorite film critic Ebert on some films from Sundance.
Hope you can read the whole linked post!!!

jack.jpgI saw my final film of Sundance 2010 here in Chicago. It was my best Sundance experience, and I want to tell you why. The film was “Jack Goes Boating,” the directorial debut of Philip Seymour Hoffman. It played here in the Music Box, as part of the “Sundance USA” outreach program, which has enlisted eight art theaters around the country to play Sundance entries while the festival is still underway.

Film:Up In The Air: A reader asks: Why is Larry doing his big Sun announcement tomorrow?

The quote is what George Clooney’s character in Up In The Air loves to say when he is firing people. Just have to say that this movie evoked my emotions, and for that I believe it is worth watching. I watched In Good Company last friday when I was at home sick and I have to say that I somehow forgot how beautifully made that film was. There are feature films that resonate anytime, while some films although good enough on their own is transformed when you are living it and watching the film doesn’t feel phony.
PS1:: Some people who built empires have never been fired. Read about some of the serial entrepreneur who never had to work for anyone but themselves their whole lives.
PS2:: Up in the air, and In Good Company are splendid films. Up in the air has so many funny/witty/smart quotes and exchanges between the characters.

Before you all start complaining about being let go, let’s be honest. You guys at Sun drove a once-great company into the ground. Who in their right mind would buy Sun and keep its employees? On the bright side, anybody who ever built an empire or changed the world sat where you are right now.

rePost::Sundance Movie Review: Buried | /Film

Nice review. My interest is slightly up.

For me this film works on every level. It achieves so much with so little. It is not only an amazing example of what minimalistic filmmaking can accomplish, but it is a great film in its own right. I have no idea if people will see it – or want to see it. The sell might/could be hard — it’s such a crazy concept, and I can understand why people might think this film could/would be boring. But this is the type of film that you show all your friends. I could definitely see this being the next word-of-mouth viral blockbuster, following in Paranormal Activity’s footsteps.
