Online news editor named to Pulitzer Prize Board

WASHINGTON—The Pulitzer Prizes, the most prestigious US journalism awards, announced on Monday that a member of a primarily online news organization had been named to the Pulitzer Board.
The election of Jim VandeHei, 38, the executive editor and co-founder of political website Politico.com, came less than a week after the Pulitzer Board expanded the eligibility of Web-only publications for the awards.
“In many ways, the Pulitzer Board is on the same mission as Politico: to embrace new media while fighting to protect the highest standards for writing, reporting and accuracy,” Politico quoted VandeHei as saying.

Great news for blogging!

New Page Announcement

I created a new page on the site. Prose page.  I’ve pasted some short stories that I’ve written three to be exact. It’s funny that the there is short story for years 2004,2005, and 2006.  Don’t know what happened 2007(I think , Ok I’m sure I got rejected  and It really took me awhile as in probably 2 years to be partially healed). These aren’t all I’ve written these past days but these were at least almost finished.  Funny but further inspecting my files I’ve written quite a few stories about a great many things , mostly (dreams, loneliness, joy, happiness, despair, etc).  I think my problems with non-romantic emotions  are that feelings of joy, loneliness, etc change to drastically and I can’t seem to muster it enough to create. Need to be more disciplined!

Site Redesign

Spent the better part of the day on this redesign.
I used a new theme (color green has grown on me).
I customized most of the settings, even the ads.
Hope you like the changes.
I was inspired by seeing this quote

A man is not idle because he is absorbed in thought. There is a visible labor and there is an invisible labor.
Victor Hugo
French dramatist, novelist, & poet (1802 – 1885)

I’ve been so absorbed in thought lately that I was questioning myself. I did this because the invisible labor was weighing me down. I wanted to do something, anything that I could see.
Once again, Hope you like the changes!

Money and Blogging

I am not earning from my blog, through experiments I’ve seen ways of earning with simple changes in what I post. I write because I love writing, I blog because i’ve continually interacted with people who have enrich my life. I blog because I want to share. Money almost always changes everything, and oft times things become all for the the love of money. Like all great gold rush, and with the help of the invisible hand the money well will dry and the endless september of the blogging will finally begone!
from Doc Searls blog here:

What I don’t like is the corrupting influence of the advertising economy itself.
Right now online advertising is a river of gold flowing out of the ground in California, and millions of bloggers — along with countless new and traditional businesses — are rushing to grab some. In addition to the other economy-distorting consequences of this rush, it is corrupting blogging’s original nature, which is amateur in the best sense or the word. Amateur is derived from amatorem, the Latin word for lover.
I’m not saying there’s anything wrong with making money by blogging. I am saying there’s something wrong with blogging mostly to make money, or to let advertising determine the purpose of your blog and what you say with it. If your business is the latter, you’re flogging, not blogging.
There is an old and subtle distinction here. Businesses and professions at their best are ways to pursue passions and organize talents — not just to make money. Of course they can’t thrive unless they make money. But few of us go into business just saying “I can’t wait to return value to my shareholders.” Investors are the main exceptions, but the best of those know that human passions other than greed are at the heart of every good business.

I Think Most Bloggers Need To Read This

Sometimes form is an art unto itself! Think Comedy!
but often times people write just to write. There is nothing wrong with this.
The thing is at least once a week we should try to write something we are proud of, to at least try to fool ourselves that we are trying to do write something worthwhile!
from the Overcoming Bias blog here:

If you just want to look insightful yourself, then you’ll want to ape insight like everyone else.  Use big words, attend to anal formatting rules, use many citations in academic articles, clever turns of phrase in popular articles, and so on.  In literary articles give many quotes, in science articles show many data tables and statistical tests, etc.
But if you actually want to be insightful, you face a harder problem.  Once you realize that most folks are merely aping surface features thought to correlate with insight, you see that doing this yourself may not actually help you to be insightful.  You may face a choice between looking insightful and being insightful. Yes for some factors that correlate with insight, increasing your score on such factors will tend to cause you to be insightful, but for many other factors such an increase will reduce or have no effect on your insight.

Just Start Just Right Just Write

I have been on a self imposed blog diet. I am supposed to not post in anything for a few days and reasses. That’s why I had a somewhat longish post for my last post. And I think I finally got it.
I’ve been telling friends to start, start anything and the fact is that advice lacks its other half.
It’s not simply “Start, just start anything” , the advise should read “Start and continue for at least two weeks”.
The thing is, at least for me Two Weeks is enough to form a habit. Two Weeks daily is enough to destroy good habits or create new ones. And of course I am referring to blogging but not only to blogging or writing. In most any thing I do If I do something obsessively for one week and enjoy it enough to continue doing it unobsessively for another week its already a habit for me.
How do I know that its a habit for me? Short answer is that when eats at you inside when you are not doing it.
The long answer is that it when doing something obsessively for a even a few days its starts to change you. You if what you do produces at least within hour after effects, you begin to yearn for those stimulants or at least actions/reactions. Then if the action is within power to be done these stimuli results in sating this need. What happens next depends on two things the feedback effect and the longterm effects.
How the Feedback affects habit formation is determined by two things; how strong the sensation/stimuli is , how much of this strength is back propagated soon and how tiresome is it to do the habit.  If something is so enjoyable yet is extremely hard to do or is enjoyable yet only after a long period of time , or if something is easy to do and provides feedback instantaneously but is just not that enjoyable; The habit will just not be formed.
The secret is finding the perfect mix of these things and you would would probably be able to form the habit.
Even if an habit is formed early on if it is just not sustainable through a multitude of means or reasons primarily due to scarcity or even worse adverse effects. Actions produce unintended consequences and ones actions now may prevent us from continuing a habit like lack of money , or time or for some activities maybe have helped end what you use to enjoy. Like maybe over fishing a small pond till you eventually leave a population of fish non-existent.
Well the personal part of this post is that I’ve been having this feeling that I am irritating a few people whenever I go about telling them or more accurately urging them to start blogging or writing or do something as a hobby, or do something to enrich their lives , their view or whatever. I get that “just agree” look that people give to those people trying to get them dupe in the lates pyramid/ponzi scheme
(Aside: In a poor country like the Philippines these schemes are a dime a dozen; and I’d bet you would be hard pressed to find anyone who doesn’t know within  about two to three degrees of separation someone who has been duped by a ponzi scheme)
(Follow up Aside: In poor countries ponzi schemes or any get rich quick scheme is bound to be effective. Just look at some countries in africa where albinos are being killed because some body parts are said to bring someone great luck. I pray we do not reach that point. )
Continuing… I have all but learned to ignore that look ang continue trying to get them to do something just through a different way because I assume my present stance is just not convincing them. Its what friends do. I I may not be able to help everyone but hell I’m going to try to at least help someone. I may not be very effective in my advocacy but damn it I will try. I grab what I can get, even if its just convincing someone to start updating their resumes, or getting someone to smile more often, I don’t care or more accurately my mind, psyche, heart can take the extra stress so why not.
Just start. Just Right Just Write or Just Do Something Anything.Please. For You. For Me, but Especially For You!

Interesting and Announcement 2008 04 07!

I was browsing through the google analytics page of OnTheSpot and I was surprised to note that the number of referrals coming from yahoo mail is double that coming from multiply and the other social networks that I post links to.
I dont know what to make of this, but here are some of my thoughts on this!

  1. Social Networks (friendster, multiply, myspace and facebook) are mostly banned in work/office networks, this probably means that fewer people are clicking through.
  2. People value their time and either have little or no energy to be curious and must prioritize more pressing/urgent matters.
  3. Email is still the number one application for internet communication.
  4. Because often times in work one is bored and combined with no access to friendster they are more apt to sate their boredom!

I’ve started work this April 1, and that is the reason for the light posting. We have a project due April 18 and work will be lighter after that time, hope to find the groove back and post at least twice a day after April 18!
