\nMANILA, Philippines – Whistleblower Heidi Mendoza believes honesty in government, business and even in the Church is needed to bring change in the country.
\n\u201cWe cannot dream of an honest government without doing anything. We need to do something,\u201d Mendoza told the Catholic Church\u2019s financial administrators.
\nMendoza is the guest speaker at the Archdiocesan\/Diocesan Financial Administrators of the Philippines 13th National Convention currently being held at the Pius XII Center in Paco, Manila. The yearly gathering, which will end on Friday, is focused on the theme \u201cSustaining Opportunities towards Success.\u201d
\nMendoza, who blew the whistle on corruption in the military, said it is difficult to hold money “especially if it is not yours.”
\nShe, however, noted: \u201cIt\u2019s not true that it\u2019s hard to be honest even in times of need.\u201d
\n\u201cI\u2019m not holy or religious but I\u2019m always looking at God\u2019s will. Another way to (maintain honesty) is constant prayer,” she said.
\n\u201cI\u2019m always proud that I am a Catholic. I\u2019m always proud that I\u2019m a Filipino. I\u2019m always proud that I\u2019m a public servant,\u201d Mendoza added.
\n\u201cThe only key is by being true to God. If you have faith you don\u2019t have to worry about many things that might come along your way.\u201d
\nThe convention has around 140 participants, mostly lay people, including some priests, nuns and bishops led by Cubao Bishop Honesto Ongtioco, treasurer of the Catholic Bishops\u2019 Conference of the Philippines.
\nMendoza made headlines in February after quitting her job in the Asian Development Bank and delivering explosive testimony before Congress on the alleged misuse of military and United Nations (UN) peacekeeping funds.
\nMendoza worked for the Commission on Audit for over 20 years and had been part of fraud audit investigations of government transactions. She resigned from the COA in 2005 and had worked with the Asian Development Bank before appearing in the congressional probes.
