Weber, Associated Press Writer \u2013 Wed Dec 16, 4:37 pm ET<br \/>\nLAREDO, Texas \u2013 The final chapter has been written for the lone bookstore on the streets of Laredo.<br \/>\nWith a population of nearly a quarter-million people, this city could soon be the largest in the nation without a single bookseller.<br \/>\nThe situation is so grim that schoolchildren have pleaded for a reprieve from next month&#8217;s planned shutdown of the B. Dalton bookstore. After that, the nearest store will be 150 miles away in <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"San Antonio\" rel=\"geolocation\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=29.5336111111,-98.4697222222&amp;spn=0.1,0.1&amp;q=29.5336111111,-98.4697222222%20%28San%20Antonio%29&amp;t=h\">San Antonio<\/a>.<br \/>\nThe B. Dalton store was never a community destination with comfy couches and an espresso bar, but its closing will create a literary void in a city with a high illiteracy rate. Industry analysts and book associations could not name a larger <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"United States\" rel=\"geolocation\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=38.8833333333,-77.0166666667&amp;spn=10.0,10.0&amp;q=38.8833333333,-77.0166666667%20%28United%20States%29&amp;t=h\">American<\/a> city without a single bookseller.<br \/>\n&#8220;Corporate America considers Laredo kind of the backwater,&#8221; said the city&#8217;s most prolific <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Author\" rel=\"wikipedia\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Author\">author<\/a>, Jerry Thompson, a professor at <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Texas A&amp;M University\" rel=\"geolocation\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=30.610369,-96.344056&amp;spn=0.01,0.01&amp;q=30.610369,-96.344056%20%28Texas%20A%26M%20University%29&amp;t=h\">Texas A&amp;M University<\/a> International who has written more than 20 books.<br \/>\nSince the closing was announced, book lovers in Laredo have flocked to the small store located between City Trendz (&#8220;Laredo&#8217;s No. 1 Underground Hip Hop Shop&#8221;) and a store that offers $4 indoor <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Kart racing\" rel=\"wikipedia\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kart_racing\">go-kart<\/a> rides to stock up on their favorite titles.<br \/>\nSchoolchildren even wrote letters to the <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Parent company\" rel=\"wikipedia\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Parent_company\">parent company<\/a>, <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Barnes &amp; Noble\" rel=\"homepage\" href=\"http:\/\/www.barnesandnobleinc.com\/\">Barnes &amp; Noble<\/a>, begging for the store to stay open.<br \/>\n&#8220;Without that store, my life would be so sad and boring,&#8221; wrote a fifth-grader named Bryanna Salinas, who signed her name with a heart.<br \/>\nvia <a href=\"http:\/\/news.yahoo.com\/s\/ap\/20091216\/ap_on_bi_ge\/us_last_bookstore_2\">Laredo could be largest US city without bookstore &#8211; Yahoo!
