But after being awake for 10 and a <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Hour\" rel=\"wikipedia\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hour\">half hours<\/a>, night owls had grown more alert, performing better on a <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Reaction time\" rel=\"wikipedia\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Reaction_time\">reaction-time<\/a> task requiring sustained attention and showing increased activity in brain areas linked to attention. More important, these regions included the suprachiasmatic area, which is home to the body\u2019s <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Circadian rhythm\" rel=\"wikipedia\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Circadian_rhythm\">circadian clock<\/a>. This area sends signals to boost <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Alertness\" rel=\"wikipedia\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alertness\">alertness<\/a> as the pressure to sleep mounts. Unlike night owls, <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Waking up early\" rel=\"wikipedia\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Waking_up_early\">early risers<\/a> didn\u2019t get this late-day lift.
