In the material world this is quite exceptional because magnetic particles are usually observed as <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Dipole\" rel=\"wikipedia\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dipole\">dipoles<\/a>, north and south combined. However there are several theories that predict the existence of monopoles. Among others, in 1931 the physicist <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Paul Dirac\" rel=\"wikipedia\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Paul_Dirac\">Paul Dirac<\/a> was led by his calculations to the conclusion that magnetic monopoles can exist at the end of tubes \u2013 called Dirac strings \u2013 that carry <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Magnetic field\" rel=\"wikipedia\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Magnetic_field\">magnetic field<\/a>.
