It seemed he listened to us, took notes, reflected it back. These movies look like the &#8217;80s because it was the &#8217;80s. The teenagers in &#8220;<a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Sixteen Candles\" rel=\"amazon\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Sixteen-Candles-Molly-Ringwald\/dp\/B001AEF6BS%3FSubscriptionId%3D0G81C5DAZ03ZR9WH9X82%26tag%3Dzemanta-20%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D165953%26creativeASIN%3DB001AEF6BS\">Sixteen Candles<\/a>&#8221; look like teenagers because Hughes, for the most part cast teenagers &#8212; instead of 26-year-olds &#8212; to play teenagers. All the facts check out: The clothes are right from the mall. The soundtracks are like <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Mixtape\" rel=\"wikipedia\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mixtape\">mix tapes<\/a> from God. School looks like school, with all its cliques tagged and categorized by <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Species\" rel=\"wikipedia\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Species\">species<\/a>, the way Principal Ed Rooney&#8217;s secretary, Grace (<a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Edie McClurg\" rel=\"imdb\" href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0566052\/\">Edie McClurg<\/a>), describes them in &#8220;<a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Ferris Bueller's Day Off (Bueller... Bueller... Edition)\" rel=\"amazon\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Ferris-Buellers-Day-Off-Bueller\/dp\/B000BMSU68%3FSubscriptionId%3D0G81C5DAZ03ZR9WH9X82%26tag%3Dzemanta-20%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D165953%26creativeASIN%3DB000BMSU68\">Ferris Bueller&#8217;s Day Off<\/a>&#8220;: &#8220;The sportos, the motorheads, geeks, sluts, bloods, wastoids, dweebies . . . they all adore [Ferris Bueller]. They think he&#8217;s a righteous dude.&#8221;<br \/>\nAnd yet, for all the universality in the Hughes high school movie, there were people who went to high school in the &#8217;80s and did not always see themselves reflected therein. His world was white, suburban, middle-to-<a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Upper class\" rel=\"wikipedia\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Upper_class\">upper class<\/a>, a place that had not yet undergone the diverse corrective of, say, &#8220;Clueless&#8221; or &#8220;<a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Harold &amp; Kumar Go to White Castle (Unrated Extended Edition)\" rel=\"amazon\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Harold-Kumar-Castle-Unrated-Extended\/dp\/B00068WOH8%3FSubscriptionId%3D0G81C5DAZ03ZR9WH9X82%26tag%3Dzemanta-20%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D165953%26creativeASIN%3DB00068WOH8\">Harold &amp; Kumar Go to White Castle<\/a>.&#8221; It was a world where parents left teenagers at home over the weekend and everyone drove drunk. This was not a perfect place, no matter how much perfect nostalgia we ascribe to it.<br \/>\nBut it was &#8220;our&#8221; place, whomever &#8220;our&#8221; means. Years after the &#8217;80s, a friend and I wondered if the popular kids had liked <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"John Hughes (director)\" rel=\"imdb\" href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0000455\/\">John Hughes<\/a> movies, too, the way we had. How could they relate, after all, when the popular kids in those movies were portrayed as the enemy?<br \/>\n<strong>At the 20th reunion, I realized something: Everyone related.
