In the <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Philippines\" rel=\"geolocation\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=14.5833333333,121.0&amp;spn=10.0,10.0&amp;q=14.5833333333,121.0%20%28Philippines%29&amp;t=h\">Philippines<\/a> people are labeled early on because of close <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Family (biology)\" rel=\"wikipedia\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Family_%28biology%29\">family<\/a> ties, where 2nd or 3rd degree relatives see each other at least once a year. One thing I observe in these awkward situation is the way people give young kids labels that tend to be based on superficial reasons that then I believe sometimes become self fulfilling.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\nThe power of stereotypes<br \/>\nReputations can be <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Self-fulfilling prophecy\" rel=\"wikipedia\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Self-fulfilling_prophecy\">self-fulfilling prophecies<\/a> ; if you give a man a bad name, he\u2018ll live down to it. A new paper (pdf) by Thomas Dee shows this.<br \/>\nHe did an <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Experiment\" rel=\"wikipedia\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Experiment\">experiment<\/a> at <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Swarthmore College\" rel=\"geolocation\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=39.905065,-75.354005&amp;spn=0.01,0.01&amp;q=39.905065,-75.354005%20%28Swarthmore%20College%29&amp;t=h\">Swarthmore College<\/a>, asking a group of students to take a <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Graduate Record Examination\" rel=\"wikipedia\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Graduate_Record_Examination\">GRE test<\/a>.
