Three years ago, Darpa launched its <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Hybrid Insect Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems\" rel=\"wikipedia\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hybrid_Insect_Micro-Electro-Mechanical_Systems\">Hybrid Insect Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems<\/a> (HI-<a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Microelectromechanical systems\" rel=\"wikipedia\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Microelectromechanical_systems\">MEMS<\/a>) project, with the intent, as described by <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"IEEE Spectrum\" rel=\"homepage\" href=\"http:\/\/www.spectrum.ieee.org\/\">IEEE Spectrum<\/a>, of creating &#8220;moths or other insects that have electronic controls implanted inside them, allowing them to be controlled by a remote operator. The animal-machine hybrid will transmit data from mounted sensors, which might include low-grade video and microphones for surveillance or gas sensors for <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Natural disaster\" rel=\"wikipedia\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Natural_disaster\">natural-disaster<\/a> reconnaissance.
